Slammers Can't Climb out of Early Hole in Loss

Traverse City, MI- The Joliet Slammers (11-16) threatened late against the Traverse City Beach Bums (16-9), but ultimately fell short in a 5-1 loss on Sunday night.

The Beach Bums drew first blood against pitcher Andrew Strenge. With one out in the third inning, catcher Jake Rhodes singled. RF Greg Harisis moved him over with a base-knock to put two on with one out. LF Jeff DeBlieux lined a ball to the right-center gap, bringing in Rhodes and Harisis to make a 2-0 game. DeBlieux later came home on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.

Traverse City scored two more in the fifth. With one out CF Jay Austin tripled and was driven in by a 2B Graham Ramos single. He would later score on a 1B Yazy Arbelo double, The nocked the starter Strenge out of the game and increased the Beach Bums lead to 5-0 after the fifth stanza.

The Slammers couldn't crack starting pitcher Kramer Chaplin, who shut out the slammers through seven innings. Joliet's best chance to score came in the fifth frame. With two outs, RF Hunter Ridge singled and 1B Adam Giacalone moved him to third with a double. With two in scoring position, 2B Max Casper grounded out to third to end the Slammers scoring threat.

The Slammers threatened in the top of ninth. DH Russell Moldenhauer reached on an error and Garza singled with one out. SS Alfredo Rodriguez singled to left to load the bases, before a wild pitch scored Moldenhauer. With two in scoring position and the Beach Bums up 5-1, catcher Jack Cleary grounded out and RF Hunter Ridge flew out to center for the game's final out. Strenge (3-2) took the loss, giving up five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched on nine hits and one walk while fanning three. Relievers Kevin McNorton and Navery Moore shut down the Beach bums over the last 3 1/3 innings, not allowing a run. Traverse City starter Kramer Champlin (2-2) earned the win.

Notes: The Slammers bullpen has only allowed one run in its last 13 1/3 IP...Reliever Kevin McNorton has only allowed one earned run in his last 13 innings pitched...The five runs allowed by Andrew Strenge are the most he's given up in a game this year...The Slammers are now 1-11 on the road and against teams above .500...Alfredo Rodriguez increased his hitting streak to seven games... Moore has now pitched 12 scoreless innings this year... Adam Giacalone recorded his first multi-hit game of the year...
