Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (June 14, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind 4-0 in the first through a weather-delayed opening inning en route to a 7-3 loss to the Evansville Otters on Sunday evening at Rent One Park in the series finale, as they took the series two games to one.
The Otters took advantage of two errors by the Miners' infield in the first inning, making just one of the four runs they scored off of Rick Teasley (4-2) earned. After a two-run single scored the first runs of the ballgame, heavy rain began falling. The game was allowed to continue, however, until after the second error brought home a third run for Evansville.
After a 32-minute rain delay, play resumed as the Otters scored another run before Teasley recorded the final out. Evansville would increase their lead to 6-0 in the fourth before the Miners got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. After Jerrud Sabourin led off the frame with a single, Niko Vasquez cracked a home run deep over the fence in left for a two-run shot, making it 6-2.
Josh Allen hit a solo home run off Brandon Cowan in the fifth inning to complete the scoring for the Otters, while Vasquez homered again for the Miners in the sixth (also a solo home run), marking the first multi-homer game for Southern Illinois this season. The Miners were unable to score the rest of the way, however, in taking the loss.
Vasquez finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and his two home runs, while Ryan DiMascio went 2-for-3 with a double for his first multi-hit game in a Miners uniform. The Miners will travel to Washington next to begin a six-game road trip against the Wild Things on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. central time.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
