Sioux Falls Skyforce News Release
Sioux Falls, S.D. (December 30, 2008) - The Sioux Falls Skyforce announced today that they will host a community blood drive on Friday, Jan. 2 from 12-6 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena. Anyone donating blood will receive four tickets to that night's game against the Erie BayHawks. Food and refreshments will also be provided courtesy of the Sioux Falls Arena.
"When we enter this time of year we see about a 20-25% decrease in donation," said Community Blood Bank Executive Director Ken Versteeg. "Without this event, we would not be able to provide an adequate blood supply for the community."
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and Sioux Falls Police Department will be competing to see which department can recruit the most blood donors for Community Blood Bank in the 14th Annual "Heroes Behind the Badges" blood donation campaign.
From December 26 through January 7, both Avera McKennan Hospital and Sanford Medical Center blood donor rooms will be available for donations. The public is encouraged to come in to donate and designate their donation to the department of their choice. Donors can choose a "police" or "fire" t-shirt while supplies last. Walk-ins are welcome, or call 322-7111 (Avera McKennan) or 333-6444 (Sanford) for appointments.
The department credited with the most blood donations will contribute $350 to the service organization of their choice; second place will donate $150. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue has chosen Children's Home Society and the Sioux Falls Police Department has designated the Special Olympics of South Dakota. Last year Sioux Falls Fire Rescue (411 units) took a narrow victory over the Sioux Falls Police Department (408 units).
Community Blood Bank uses 550 units of blood per week to meet the needs of local hospital patients. Last year's "Heroes Behind the Badges" event broke a record as 819 donations were collected. For more information about "Heroes Behind the Badges" and donating blood log onto www.cbblifeblood.org.
