Colorado 14ers News Release
DENVER - December 30, 2008 - The Colorado 14ers used a 40 point fourth quarter to come from behind and take a 131-120 win over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at the Broomfield Event Center Tuesday night. Colorado rallied from a five point fourth quarter deficit to move to 8-3 on the season, while Fort Wayne falls to 4-7.
Eddie Gill and Sonny Weems scored eight points apiece in the final period to put the 14ers over the top. Weems finished with a team high 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Gill added 23 and 12 assists in the win. Colorado held Fort Wayne to 47 second half points after allowing 73 to the Mad Ants in the first two quarters.
"We defended. That's how we got our offense going," said 14ers head coach Bob MacKinnon. "We got after them defensively and we stopped the easy opportunities by really, really locking them down."
Denver Nuggets assigned player Cheikh Samb had another big night for Colorado, putting up 19 points, with nine rebounds and five blocked shots. New Jersey Nets assignee Sean Williams also made his 14ers debut with six points, four rebounds, and four blocks in 17 minutes.
The news was not all good for Colorado though, as leading scorer James Mays tore his right Achilles tendon just 8:36 into the first quarter. Mays entered Tuesday's game averaging 19.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
"It looks like James will be out the rest of the season, so that's a tough blow," said MacKinnon. "It takes any of the enjoyment out of this win."
Fort Wayne was led by Dewitt Scott's 30 point effort, as he knocked down six 3-pointers on the night. Walker Russell Jr. added 20 points and 14 assists before being ejected from the game for kicking the ball into the stands with 2:23 to play.
The 14ers are back at home Friday night to host the Tulsa 66ers. Fort Wayne returns home to host the Iowa Energy on Saturday.
