
Skychiefs score early to down Bulls 9-6

Durham NC - Syracuse scored four runs in the first inning and five runs in the third inning on their way to a 9-6 victory over the Bulls on Monday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls modest win streak ended at four.
John Hattig hit a three-run home run with one out in the first inning, and Justin Singleton hit a single three batters later to plate John-Ford Griffin and give the SkyChiefs a 4-0 lead. Two innings later, Kevin Barker led off with a double, and scored on a John Hattig single. Jason Phillips hit a RBI-double after a John-Ford Griffin walk, and Ryan Roberts hit a three-run home run to give Syracuse a 9-1 lead. John Hattig finished 2-5 with two runs scored and four runs driven in, leading six SkyChiefs with multi-hit efforts.
Kevin Witt stayed hot at the plate adding another home run in the second inning, giving him four in four games this home stand and an International League-leading 23 on the season. Delmon Young hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning, and now has 15 RBI in 14 games since his return, hitting .442 (23-52) over that span.
Jamie Vermilyea (2-4) picked up the win for the SkyChiefs, going five innings while allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk, with two strikeouts. Vinny Chulk pitched two scoreless innings with one hit and four strikeouts, and Brandon League pitched the final two frames to pick up his seventh save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Jason Hammel (3-7) took the loss for the Bulls, going two and a third innings, allowing nine earned runs on nine hits and a walk, with three strikeouts. The Bulls got six and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief on the night, with Doug Waechter going two and two-thirds, Chad Orvella going two, and Jason Childers going one inning. Juan Salas pitched a scoreless ninth inning, and now has gone 46 and two-thirds innings without allowing an earned run between Montgomery and Durham He also has a scoreless streak of 19 and two-thirds innings.
Durham looks to celebrate the 4th of July by getting back to their winning ways against Syracuse tomorrow night, as LHP J.P. Howell (1-1) faces RHP Josh Banks (5-6) at 7:00 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
