Norfolk Tides News Release

July 3, 2006 - The Charlotte Knights rallied from a 6-1 deficit, knocking off the Tides 7-6 in front of a season-high crowd of 11,393 fans Monday night.

The Knights plated an unearned run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead, but the Tides struck for back-to-back three-run innings off of Charlotte starter Charlie Haeger (9-2) to go up by a score of 6-1.

Anderson Hernandez put the Tides on the board with a two-run double to right-center in the third inning, and came around to score one batter later on an RBI single by Jose Offerman to give the Tides a 3-1 lead.

Norfolk extended their lead to 6-1 in the next frame, as Chase Lambin drove home two runs with a one-out triple to the base of the right field wall. Norfolk catcher Sandy Martinez then scored Lambin with an RBI single to right field.

Charlotte chipped away at the lead in the fifth, however, courtesy of a two-run home run by catcher Pascual Matos off of Norfolk starter Tim LaVigne. LaVigne was making a spot start in place of John Maine, who was recalled to New York earlier Monday evening to start for the injured Pedro Martinez.

LaVigne, who graduated from Cox High School in Virginia Beach, allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits in 5.0 innings of work. The 5.0 innings pitched were a career-high for LaVigne, who turns 28-years-old on July 4.

The Knights reclaimed the lead with four runs in the 6th inning off of Tides reliever Juan Perez (0-1). Five of the first six batters to face Perez reached base safely, and Matos once again had the big hit of the inning with a two-run single to center field.

Charlotte southpaw Boone Logan pitched two scoreless innings of relief - including working around a leadoff double by Victor Diaz in the ninth inning - to post his first save of the season, and help the Knights improve to 8-1 against Norfolk this season.

With the win, the Knights improved their record to 54-29, tops in the International League.

Norfolk and Charlotte will continue their series with a unique doubleheader Tuesday night from Knights Stadium. The two teams will resume their suspended game from June 25 in the bottom of the third inning before playing a seven-inning contest after the conclusion of game one. Game time from Charlotte is slated for 5:15 p.m.
