
Sky Sox slip by 'Birds in finale

Memphis, Tenn. - Colorado Springs avoided a series sweep with a 7-6 win over Memphis Monday night at AutoZone Park.
The Sky Sox claimed an early lead scoring five runs in the first two innings off rehabbing Redbirds starter Mark Mulder. The Sox scored three runs in the second inning thanks to three doubles, including Cory Sullivan's two-run double with two outs. Colorado Springs scored twice more in the fifth with newly added players Juan Castro and Rick Guarno knocking in runs. Sean Barker led the Sox with three hits while eight different players collected at least one hit.
For Mulder it was his second loss in two starts for Memphis. The lefty allowed seven runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work. He threw 90 pitches, 61 for strikes. The Memphis bullpen, however, shut the door with Ron Flores and Kelvin Jimenez combining for eight strikeouts over the final three innings.
David Freese drove in a pair of runs in the fifth inning before Rico Washington and D'Angelo Jimenez each hit solo homers in the seventh inning to draw the âBirds within a run. For Washington it was his second straight game with a home run and Jimenez finished the night with two hits and two runs scored.
Memphis travels to Las Vegas tomorrow to begin a four-game series with the 51s. Right-hander Blake Hawksworth gets the ball for the first game and will face right-hander Jason Johnson. Game time is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. CST.
