Skole Leads Offense Assault in 10-2 Win

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, had their best offensive performance of the season, besting the Wilmington Blue Rocks 10-2 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Saturday.

The Pelicans' 10 runs ties their season high, equaling the 10 runs the Birds scored against Carolina on May 10th. The team's 15 hits is a season high on to itself.

Myrtle Beach started the scoring early, scoring in each of the first two innings. Odubel Herrera began the first with a single, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. He scored without another hit, taking second on a steal, third on an error and scoring on a groundout by Tomas Telis. The second run for Myrtle Beach came in with a Jake Skole double in the second. He scored on an Edwin Garcia single to center.

The bulk of the Pelican offense came across in the sixth. Leading 3-0 (Skole homered in the fourth), the Pelicans batted around, scoring four runs on six hits. Skole, Josh Richmond, Cookie Castillo and Tomas Telis drove in runs with a single, sac fly, single and single respectively. It was 7-0 Birds at that point.

Wilmington did put two runs across in the seventh inning to cut the game to a five run lead, but the Pelicans instantly responded. Myrtle Beach plated a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the 10-2 final.

In the seventh inning it was Skole again, blasting his second homer of the game. The eighth saw Telis score on a wild pitch and Villanueva fly out to left to drive in another.

Every Pelican either scored or drove in a run in Friday's game. Skole, however, was the star. The Pelicans centerfielder is now 7-for-7 over the last two games and has reached in nine straight plate appearances. The streak is on the heels of a 1-for-34 slump. Skole's average has jumped 43 points in two days and he was a triple shy of the cycle against Wilmington. The outfielder either drove in or scored six of Myrtle Beach's 10 runs Saturday.

Pelicans pitcher Nick Tepesch, facing the same team he no-hit just a week ago, went six and two thirds innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. He took the win to improve to 3-3. Jason Adam suffered his seventh loss for Wilmington. The Pelicans team ERA fell to 2.77. The team record for ERA in a season is 2.50, set in 2000.
