Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - In a rematch of Saturday's history-making no-hitter, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (23-22) brought their bats in a 10-2 defeat of the Wilmington Blue Rocks (22-24). The Blue Rocks' most lopsided loss of the season also saw the Fightin' Feathers tie their season-high mark for runs in a game while establishing a new zenith with 15 hits.
Things started innocently enough for prospect starter Jason Adam. An infield hit that coincided with an on-time ball that was dropped at first allowed Odubel Herrera to start the first inning with a hit. He stole second and took third when Kevin David's throw errantly bounced off of him during his slide. The next man up, Tomas Telis, collected a run-scoring groundout to make it 1-0. The next inning, Jake Skole doubled a bouncing ball over Brian Fletcher's glove at first and later scored on a two-out single by Edwin Garcia that snapped an 0-for-14 slide.
While the Blue Crew got its first hits against starter Nick Tepesch (3-3) in the second inning, Saturday's no-no magician was still quite solid. He gave up just two runs on five hits over 6.2 innings for his second win in as many starts.
Conversely, Adam (1-7) suffered his sixth loss in as many nods. The Pelicans salted their lead with a Skole solo homer that bounced halfway up the light pole in right-center for a 3-0 margin. In the sixth, five straight productive plate appearances (four singles, one sacrifice fly) chased Adam. Reliever Cole White allowed an inherited runner to score as the Pelicans tagged Adam with a season-worst seven runs on a season-worst-tying 10 hits over 5.1 frames.
A run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Alex McClure and a sac fly from Whit Merrifield got the Rocks on the board in the seventh. Skole's second homer of the night made for a response in the bottom half of the inning, while a wild pitch by White and Christian Villanueva's sac fly in the eighth rounded out the scoring.
The three-game set continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Wilmington right-hander Santiago Garrido (1-1, 1.64) will face right-hander Kyle Hendricks (1-4, 2.68). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
