Hill City Howlers News Release
Lynchburg, VA- Seven unanswered runs off starter Cody Martin was too much for the 'Cats to overcome in their 11-8 loss. The Hillcats saw Nick Ahmed get a career-high five hits and Mycal Jones explode with three extra-base hits. However, the Nationals would have an offensive outburst from top to bottom in the victory
The P-Nats wasted no time to attacking Cody Martin. Three of the first four batters reached with the third batter, David Freitas, doubling home Blake Kelso for the game's first run. Zach Walters would add a sac fly just four pitches later and the Nats took a 2-0. An error on first baseman Chris Garcia would see Freitas score and the inning continue. After a walk, Kevin Keys unloaded on a 2-2 pitch and Taylor and Justin Bloxom would score. Five runs came across the plate to give the P-Nats a huge early lead.
Potomac kept their foot on the gas in the top of the second. Adrian Sanchez would single and steal second to put himself in scoring position. Rick Hague singled and Sanchez scored to make it 6-0.
The final answered run for the P-Nats would score in the top of the third. Taylor singled and reached second when Keys grounded into a fielder's choice. Randolph Oduber hit a single on a line to score the speedy Taylor. Potomac had a 7-0 lead after three.
Finally, in the bottom of the fourth the Hillcats got on the board. With two outs, the Hillcats had four consecutive batters reach to knock out starter Trevor Holder. Highlighting the three-run inning was Mycal Jones' two-RBI triple and Nick Ahmed's RBI single to cut the lead to 7-3.
Another run was added in the fifth by Lynchburg, again with two outs, but this time off of lefty Paul Applebee. Garcia blasted a double off the center field wall to start the rally. Matt Weaver got his first hit of the day with a flair to center. Garcia scored, Weaver took second on thesingle and the scoremoved to 7-4.
What looked like the knock-out blow by Potomac in the top half, was anything but in the bottom half. The inning started with Kyle Rose reaching on the Hague error. Ahmed added a double and Tommy La Stella extended his hit streak to 13 games with a two-RBI single. Adam Milligan registered a double and Braeden Schlehuber singled home La Stella to make it 11-7. Garcia's sacrifice fly that scored Milligan made it a three-run game again.
Each team would threaten, but couldn't add to their totals.
Getting his fifth loss of the season was Cody Martin (5-5). He labored through 3.1 innings, surrendering eight hits, seven runs--four earned--two walks and three whiffs. Paul Applebee (1-1) was in line for his second win of the season, but was deemed to have too porous of an outing to deserve a win. He went 2.0 innings, giving up five runs--three earned--on six hits. Applebee also struck out two. Neil Holland (3-1) would get the win for his two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and fanned one.
