Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
(ROUND ROCK, Texas) - The Sugar Land Skeeters opened their road trip with a 2-1 victory over the Round Rock Express at Dell Diamond.
The Skeeters bullpen, using six relievers, combined to allow one run through seven innings following starter Austin Pruitt, who was making the fourth appearance of his MLB Rehab Assignment. Pruitt, making his second appearance with the Skeeters, threw two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Pruitt needed just 18 pitches to navigate his two scoreless innings, marking the longest outing of his rehab assignment.
Right-hander Joe Smith began an MLB Rehab Assignment with the Skeeters in Thursday's win, striking out one through a scoreless inning of relief. Smith, who received the winning decision, has been on the 10-Day Injured List since June 6 with right elbow soreness.
Ronel Blanco picked up his team-high seventh save of the year, setting Round Rock down in order in the ninth inning. Kit Scheetz, Michael Kelly and Riley Ferrell combined for four scoreless innings leading up to Blanco in the ninth.
Jake Meyers drove in both Skeeters runs, with an RBI double in the first and an RBI single in the third inning. Meyers has collected 17 RBIs over his last 12 games. Meyers drove in Alex De Goti on both occasions, and De Goti finished the night 2-for-4 with a triple.
The win Thursday ended a three-game losing streak for the Skeeters, one away from matching their longest of the season.
The Skeeters will send right-hander Hector Velazquez to the mound at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at Dell Diamond. The Express will counter with left-hander Hyeon-Jong Yang.
Single-game Skeeters tickets are on sale through the month of July. People can visit sugarlandskeeters.com/tickets to purchase their tickets today.
