Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

(Sugar Land TX)---While Southern Maryland's pitching staff came into tonight's ballgame having held opponents scoreless in 32 of the last 36 innings played, Sugar Land's offense put five runs on the board in the first two innings to pave the way to a 7-1 Skeeters victory to end the Blue Crabs six game winning streak.

In the bottom of the first, Delwyn Young walked with two outs, and the next hitter Dustin Martin roped a homerun over the wall in left field to make it 2-0. The next hitter Beamer Weems doubled off the wall in right, followed by Chris Wallace wrapping a single to right to score Weems to make it 3-0.

Sugar Land kept the scoring going in the bottom of the second. Patrick Palmeiro led off the inning with a five pitch walk. After a Palmeiro steal of second, Amadeo Zazueta singled to center to put runners at the corners. Edwin Gomez stepped up to the plate and singled to score Palmeiro, and advance Zazueta to third base. Willy Taveras then lifted a fly ball deep enough to score Zazueta from third on the sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.

The Skeeters added a run in the bottom of the fourth and seventh innings. With Willy Taveras at second, Delwyn Young singled to right to score Taveras to make it 6-0, and thus ending the night of Blue Crabs starter Brian Baker, who went just 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits. In the bottom of the seventh, Beemer Weams led things off with a double, followed up by a Chris Wallace single bring the score to 7-0.

Southern Maryland received an RBI single from Fred Lewis in the ninth to make it 7-1, but that's all the runs the Blue Crabs could push across on the evening. The three, four, five hitters of Southern Maryland came into the night hitting .352 in their last six games, went 0-10 on the evening, while the Blue Crabs offense collectively left 10 runners on base.

Game four of the seven game series will commence tomorrow at 6:05 P.M. RHP Jake Hale (4-1, 2.25), who pitched a complete game in his last start will throw for Southern Maryland, while RHP Josh Greer (0-1, 3.68) will start for Sugar Land.
