Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters offense broke out in a big way early, pushing across five runs in the first two frames to claim a 7-1 victory over Southern Maryland in front of 6,551 fans at Constellation Field. The win snaps a three-game losing streak and improves Sugar Land's record to 14-20 while Southern Maryland falls to 21-13.
Dustin Martin, Chris Wallace, Beamer Weems and Amadeo Zazueta each picked up a pair of hits in the win. Martin and Wallace also logged a pair of RBI.
The Skeeters ended their offensive woes early in the contest with Southern Maryland. Delwyn Young drew a two-out walk before Dustin Martin blasted Blue Crabs starter, Brian Barker's 0-1 offering over the wall in left, staking Sugar Land to a 2-0 lead. Beamer Weems followed with a double down the line in left and Chris Wallace singled into right, scoring Weems and inflating the cushion to 3-0 in the first.
Sugar Land expanded on the lead in the bottom of the second. Patrick Palmeiro drew a leadoff walk and stole second for his first swipe of the season. Amadeo Zazueta singled up the middle, moving Palmeiro to third before Edwin Gomez picked up a base knock on a single into right, scoring Palmeiro. With Zazueta at third, Willy Taveras lifted a sacrifice fly to right, moving the lead to 5-0 in the second.
The Skeeters continued to pound the ball early, plating another run in the fourth. After Taveras drew a leadoff walk, Young hit a ground ball through the middle, pushing across the sixth run for Sugar Land.
Shane Loux turned in a stellar outing for Sugar Land. The former World Champion went 6.0 innings and allowed no runs while scattering a pair of hits and walks. The right-hander picked up his first win of the season in the victory.
After James Parr escaped a jam with runners on the corners in the top of the seventh, Sugar Land tacked on an insurance run. Weems ripped a double just inside the bag at third and Wallace followed with a single up the middle, inflating the lead to 7-0.
John Lujan surrendered a run in the top of the ninth, breaking the shutout, but the reliever was able to strand the bases loaded to secure the win for Sugar Land.
