5 Things to Know about #SJvDAL
Jara vs. Almeyda
FC Dallas forward Franco Jara and San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matías Almeyda have a history. Although both Argentines, Jara and Almeyda are direct exports from Liga MX with Jara coming to Dallas from CF Pachuca and Almeyda leaving Chivas Guadalajara for San Jose in 2018. When playing for Pachuca, Jara faced Almeyda's Chivas team twice and scored three goals, including a brace in a back-and-forth 4-4 draw.
New Formation
In last week's season-opener, FCD head coach Luchi Gonzalez strayed from his prototypical 4-3-3 formation and opted for a three at the back lineup. The 3-4-3 formation saw new signing José Martínez inserted next to Bressan and Matt Hedges as a third center back while the full backs (in that case Johnny Nelson and Ryan Hollingshead) pushed further up the field as wing backs. The added defender helped Dallas keep a shutout in the home opener, so the 3-4-3 is something Luchi may employ more as the season progresses.
Right Where He Left Off
FC Dallas goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer led all MLS 'keepers in Goals Against Average (GAA) at 0.84 (13 goals conceded in 16 games) over the 2020 season. In last week's 2021 home opener, Maurer made six saves to earn his first shutout of the season which earned him a place on the MLS Team of the Week bench.
Against San Jose
FC Dallas' all-time regular season record against San Jose stands at 20-28-17 with 77 goals scored and 100 conceded. The club's total away record against the Earthquakes is 8-16-9 with 38 goals for and 56 against. Since the 'Quakes moved into their new stadium PayPal Park in 2015, FCD has a 1-1-4 record at the venue.
About San Jose
San Jose finished in 8th place in the Western Conference in 2020 and advanced to the first round of the playoffs where the team fell to Sporting KC 3-0 on penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw. In the 2021 season-opener, the Earthquakes were defeated 2-1 by Houston Dynamo FC at BBVA Stadium in Houston.
