Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS - Columbus Crew SC announced today that as part of its celebration of Earth Day (April 22), the Club held a tree planting at the OhioHealth Performance Center on Tuesday. The event, which featured current Crew SC Academy products and current First Team players Aboubacar Keita and Isaiah Parente, was part of Crew SC's "Seeds of the Future" initiative - in support of MLS WORKS' Greener Goals - which helps to identify ways to reduce the greenhouse gas footprint left by MLS clubs.
The tree planting at the OhioHealth Performance Center is the first of multiple green initiatives to be held by the Crew in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint left by the Club. Additional green activations in the community as part of Crew SC's "Seeds of the Future" initiative are slated to be held in the future, with dates and locations to be announced at a later time.
"This week's tree planting at the OhioHealth Performance Center reflects the Crew's commitment to creating a sustainable environment," said Crew SC Executive Vice President & Chief Business Officer Steve Lyons. "Our 'Seeds of the Future' initiative is critical to reducing our carbon footprint, but also symbolic of the future competitiveness of our Club. New generations of Crew SC Academy players will now be able to train alongside the Crew's First Team as they work to grow their skills and blossom into professional players, much like Aboubacar and Isaiah have done. We are proud that our new state-of-the-art OhioHealth Performance Center serves as such an integral part of club's mission and commitment to the community."
OhioHealth has been a partner of Crew SC since 1997 and was announced as the first Founding Partner for Crew SC on February 25, 2020. Notably, the partnership includes naming rights to the Black & Gold's training facility. The OhioHealth Performance Center is slated to open in June of this year.
The OhioHealth Performance Center will be located on the team's existing stadium site (1 Black and Gold Boulevard), and will be home to the Crew headquarters, player training grounds, and a new community sports park. The facility will feature two First Team natural grass fields, supported by hydronic heating and SubAir systems; one natural grass field and artificial turf for Academy use; and a seasonal bubble over the stadium field.
