Odessa Jackalopes News Release
TOPEKA, KS - After splitting last weekend in Rio Grande Valley, the Jackalopes headed in to Topeka to take on the South Division leading RoadRunners. Topeka was coming off of a sweep of the Amarillo Bulls last weekend, after being swept the weekend before by Wichita Falls.
Topeka wasted little time, getting on the board first 22 seconds into the hockey game. Tyler Hayes drove a shot from the blue line that was stopped by Robin Johansson, but Tyler Irvine wrapped in the rebound. The Jacks had an opportunity to tie on a power play but NHL prospect Matej Tomek stopped all bids. Soon after the penalty expired, Willie Brown scored to put Topeka up 2-0 on a breakaway. At 14:46 of the first, Colton Schmidt was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a check from behind. Topeka would score twice on that penalty and take a 4-0 advantage to the locker room.
In the second, the Jackalopes set off to bridge the gap between them and the RoadRunners. Hampus Sjodahl got the Jacks on the board on a pass from newcomer Nicolas Carbone. Sjodahl's 4th goal of the year made it 4-1 Topeka after two periods.
In the third, Hampus Sjodahl netted his second of the game 4:59 into the third to cut the RoadRunner lead to 4-2. While Lane Valimont was in the box, Leo Lumm was pulled down on a shorthanded breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Lumm was thwarted by Matej Tomek to keep it 4-2 'Runners. Mike Gornall added a late goal at the 16:00 mark to put Topeka up for good, 5-2. Jacks Goaltender Parker Butler filled in admirably for Robin Johansson, who was pulled with 2:27 remaining in the first period. Butler made 19 saves on 20 shots. Nicolas Carbone had two points in his Jacks debut.
The Jacks finish their two-game set with Topeka Sunday, October 12 at 6:05 PM CT.
