Keystone Ice Miners News Release
SPRINGFIELD, IL - In a game that saw four lead changes, the Springfield Jr. Blues were ahead when the final buzzer went off in Sunday afternoon's game at Nelson Center. Ice Miners captain Lucas Little scored his first two goals of the season, but Keystone gave up three powerplay goals and dropped a 5-4 decision, losing two of three on the weekend to Springfield.
As they did in all three weekend games, the Ice Miners opened the scoring when Little notched his first of the night just 2:27 into the game. Garrett Hallford and Taylor Fernandez set it up. The Jr. Blues tied it with their first powerplay goal at 13:36. Brady Tomlak had a tap in on the far side of the net. Just over a minute later, Jon Hall restored the Ice Miners lead when on a delayed penalty he cashed in his own rebound and made the score 2-1 through twenty minutes.
A wild second period saw a combined five goals, the first two by the Jr. Blues. Jason Dhoogie and Tyler Funk each scored their first goals of the season 53 seconds apart at 6:58 and 7:51, giving Springfield its first lead of the night. Tomlak and Jr. Blues head coach took penalties for arguing with the officiating and the Ice Miners were given a two man advantage, to which Little took advantage and scored his 2nd goal of the game at 12:11 of the period. The Ice Miners regained the lead under two minutes later when Scott Donahue knocked a rebound out of mid-air from an inital Austin Romzek shot. However, Keystone couldn't take the lead into the intermission as Brian Rigali managed to tie the game at 4 with only 40 seconds left in the frame.
Despite outshooting Springfield 16-7 in the 3rd period, the Jr. Blues mustered the only goal, when Joshua Lammon netted a powerplay marker at 8:52. Each team finished with a total of 28 shots on net. Springfield third string goaltender Niko DellaMarggorie got the win in relief of Jeremy Wik, who was pulled after Keystone's fourth goal.
The Ice Miners fell to 6-6-1, still one point behind Soo for first place in the North division. They will not play next weekend and have a home and home with the Johnstown Tomahawks starting Saturday, October 25th at 7:00 at Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown the following week.
