Keystone Ice Miners News Release
SAULT STE MARIE, MI - Cameron Smith mustered the only Keystone goal, while the Eagles got contributions from three different scorers in what proved to be the final game of the North Division Semifinals on Friday night at Pullar Stadium. The Eagles got a 3-1 victory, completed a sweep of the Ice Miners, and advanced to the North Division Finals.
Soo opened the scoring late in the first period when Matt Menta threw a shot from the sideboard at Ice Miners goaltender Nick Kossoff. Kossoff, not expecting the shot, had the puck trickle off his right pad and into the net. Keegan Miller was credited with the goal, from Menta and Chase Matson. The Ice Miners got even midway through the second period when Cameron Smith followed up on a Ji Young Li rush and tied the game at 10:45 of period two. Li and Maiden assisted. Just over four minutes later, Menta set up another one to restore the Eagles lead, feeding Leo Lumm across the slot. Soo took a 2-1 lead into the 3rd.
Trevor Cope scored a powerplay goal 3:47 into the final period, unleashing a slapshot from the left faceoff circle to Kossoff's blocker side, and making the score 3-1. Joey Sofo was awarded a penalty shot at 6:21, but was stopped by Chad Catt, who made a total of 38 saves, allowing only two goals in the entire series, facing over 100 shots.
The Eagles will face #1 overall seeded Janesville Jets in the North Division Finals, beginning Friday night at Janesville Ice Arena.
