Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY-Elder Torres' grand slam capped a six-run sixth inning for Norfolk (4-8), giving the Tides an 8-4 win over the Louisville Bats Friday night. The game was delayed 51 minutes prior to the seventh inning for the 9,156 in attendance at Louisville Slugger Field due to an electrical outage.
Louisville shortstop Anderson Machado and second baseman Mark Bellhorn each contributed two base hits and two RBI in tonight's loss. As a team, the Bats (7-7) managed 11 hits, but could not make up the five-run late inning deficit. Right fielder Jeff Bannon went 2-for-4 with a run to add to his team leading .357 batting average.
Norfolk (4-8) opened the sixth inning with a double off reliever Gary Majewski by first baseman Mike Cervenak. After a Terry Tiffee groundout, Cesar Crespo singled to drive in Cervenak tying the game at 2-2. The Tides took the lead on a two-out single by Luis Montanaz, scoring Crespo. Majewski then walked center fielder Adam Stern to load the bases, setting the stage for Torres' grand slam.
Majewski (0-1) pitched two-thirds of an inning and picked up the loss in relief. Homer Bailey started the game and pitched well for the Bats allowing one earned run on four hits in 5.0 innings.
Tides reliever Andy Mitchell (2-1) picked up the win, pitching 3.0 innings while allowing just one earned run on three hits. Norfolk pulled starting pitcher Kurt Birkins after giving up three hits and one earned run in three innings.
LHP Mike Gosling (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to take the mound Saturday afternoon for the Bats. Norfolk RHP Jon Leicester (0-1, 3.86) gets the starting nod for Saturday's 2:15 p.m. first pitch. Over 500,000 people are expected to be in the downtown area for Thunder Over Louisville, but standing room only tickets are still available for tomorrow's game. For an additional $10, fans will have the opportunity to watch the firework display from the field following the game.
