Six-Run Second Pushes West Virginia Past Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC - Wyatt Mathisen (3-4) led the West Virginia Power to a 7-0 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs Thursday night in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 4,512 fans. The RiverDogs (10-10) remain in fourth place of the Southern Division, while the Power (9-12) stay in sixth place in the Northern Division.

First pitch was delayed 1:33 due to rain.

Following a hitless first inning, West Virginia scored the first runs of the night in the top half of the second. With the bases loaded and no outs, an error by RiverDogs second baseman Francisco Rosario allowed two Power runners to score. A third run was scored when RiverDogs' starting pitcher Daniel Camarena (0-3) balked. Later in the inning, Dilson Herrera tripled and drove in two more runs. Herrera then scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Bell, making the score 6-0.

Max Moroff extended the lead to 7-0 in the top of the third inning with his second home run of the season.

Camarena, who picked up the loss, was relieved by Alex Smith in the top of the sixth inning. In five innings of work, Camarena allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits and struck out seven batters.'

Cito Culver had two base hits for Charleston and finished the series with at least one hit in all three games.

The RiverDogs managed only four hits off of West Virginia starting pitcher Joely Rodriguez (1-2) who was relieved by Ryan Hafner after 5.1 innings of work. Rodriguez allowed no runs, struck out four batters, and earned his first win of the season.

BALLPARK FUN: It was the RiverDogs' first ever Zero K Race to the Bar before the game. Over 100 participants enjoyed the inaugural event.

COMING UP: The first game of a four-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators is Friday evening at 7:05. RHP Cesar Vargas (1-1, 5.40 ERA) will be on the mound for Charleston and will face RHP Euclides Leyer (1-2, 4.34 ERA) for the Intimidators. It will be a General Dynamics Land Systems-Force Protection Red Shirt Friday, and anyone who wears red to the game will get $1 off their ticket at the box office. They can then donate that dollar to local charity Canines for Veterans. There will also be Piggly Wiggly Postgame Fireworks.
