Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 25, 2013) -- The Rome Braves rallied for four runs over the final two innings, overcoming a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 8-6, on Thursday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium, claiming a series win, 2-games-to-1. Braves catcher and Charlotte native Tyler Tewell went 4-for-5, scoring a run in the eighth inning and driving in an insurance run in the ninth.
With Kannapolis up 6-4 heading into the eighth, Tewell -- a graduate of Butler High School -- led off with a single, and Intimidators shortstop Jean Almanzar's fielding error allowed Felix Marte to reach. Two batters later, Levi Hyams' sac-fly cashed Tewell. Josh Elander followed with an RBI-double and scored on a Carlos Franco base hit for the third run of the frame for a 7-6 lead.
Rome reliever Zach Jadofsky (1-0) worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Zach Isler was charged with his second blown save and tagged for the loss, giving up three runs (none earned) on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Isler threw a perfect seventh before running into trouble in the eighth.
Intimidators starter Myles Jaye saw his scoreless inning streak snapped in the first inning when Rome's Casey Kalenkowsky singled home Jose Peraza. Jaye hadn't allowed a run in his last 18 innings of work and finished the night giving up three runs (one earned) while scattering eight hits over 5.0 innings. He matched his season-high with seven strikeouts.
Ruben Sierra Jr. made his debut for the Intimidators, joining the team from Extended Spring earlier in the day after Adam Heisler earned a promotion to Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem. Sierra Jr. started in center field and batted third before a third-inning ejection ended his night early.
Kannapolis overcame an early Rome lead with two runs in the second and three in the fourth. Michael Marjama went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI- doubles in the loss, and Jean Almanzar was 3-for-3 at the plate. Micah Johnson added a two-run double in the fourth inning, stretching the Intimidators lead to 5-1 at the time.
The Intimidators hit the road for seven games, starting with a four- game series in Charleston. The team returns to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Saturday, May 4, with a post-game fireworks show presented by Freightliner Rec Club.
