Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, SC- April 25, 2013)- The West Virginia Power shutout the Charleston RiverDogs 7-0 Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Three Power pitchers combined to hold the RiverDogs without a run and the offense rode a second inning outburst to their first win of the season series.
The Power sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the second inning, scoring six times. Eric Wood and Wyatt Mathisen both singled and Max Moroff reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Raul Fortunato reached on an error charged to RiverDogs second baseman Francisco Rosario that allowed Wood and Mathisen to score. A balk by Charleston starter Daniel Camarena brought home Moroff and made it 3-0 West Virginia. Dilson Herrera tripled in a pair and later scored on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to six runs.
Moroff hit a solo home run in the top of the third to cap the Power scoring at 7-0. The shortstop has hit both of his home runs this season of Charleston RiverDogs pitching.
Joely Rodriguez (1-2) pitched five and a third shutout innings before handing the ball to the bullpen in the sixth. Ryan Hafner struck out two with runners on base in the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh. Kyle Haynes completed the combined shutout with two innings of one-hit ball. Camarena (0-1) took the loss after surrendering all seven runs, five earned, on six hits.
Mathisen paced the offense with his first three-hit game this season. Walker Gourley and Wood also had multi-hit games to help the Power snap a two game skid.
West Virginia travels to Savannah to start a four game weekend set starting Friday evening. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on May 1 to open a seven-game, eight-day homestand against the Greensboro Grasshoppers and Greenville Drive.
