Hoppers Return Home for Seven Games
Published on April 25, 2013 under South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
After a splitting four games on a trip to Delmarva and then enjoying a day off, the Hoppers return to NewBridge Bank Park for seven games.
They begin a four-game series with Hickory Tuesday at 7 p.m. and follow with three games against Rome.
At Delmarva, the Hoppers lost the first and fourth games of the series and won the middle games. They absorbed an 8-0 loss on Sunday, so a day off likely did them some good.
The piggyback slot is up in the rotation, so Brian Ellington should be scheduled to start Tuesday's game with Andrew Steckenrider following in relief. Both have won from the bullpen so far but neither has won in a start.
Second baseman Yeison Hernandez cooled off slightly in Delmarva but still brings the league's second-best batting average, .391, back home for the Hoppers. Jesus Solarzano is hitting .344 and Matt Juengel stands at .341. Solorzano has 13 RBIs, trailing team leader Viosergy Rosa by one.
Hickory and Rome are the two clubs the Hoppers faced on the road to start the season. They won three of four against the Crawdads and lost two of three to the Braves. The means, in the bizarre way the South Atlantic League schedule works, that by the end of April Greensboro will have faced Hickory and Rome seven times each.
The Hoppers are 10-8 so far, trailing Delmarva and Hickory by a game in the Northern Division.
ALUMNI NOTES: The Marlins recently called up former Hopper pitcher Tom Koehler (2009). He becomes the seventh ex-Hopper on the active roster, joining pitchers Jose Fernandez (2012), A.J. Ramos (2010), Steven Cishek (2008) and Alex Sanabia (2008), and outfielders Chris Coghlan (2007) and Giancarlo Stanton (2008). Two more Greensboro graduates are on the DL - Logan Morrison (2007) and pitcher Jose Ceda (2010), both on the 60-day list ... The Marlins recently optioned catcher Kyle Skipworth (2009-10) to Triple-A New Orleans ... Pitcher Chris Volstad, who was here in 2005, was cut by the Cubs, signed by Colorado and recently optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs by the Rockies.
