Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Pawtucket Red Sox sent nine men to the plate in their half of the 9th Monday to break a 2-2 tie en route to an 8-2 victory and a series split in Rochester.
With a 2-2 start to their two-city Western New York road trip, the PawSox avoided their first loss in a four-game set to Rochester since 2009. And for the third time in six wins over the Red Wings, they roughed up right-hander Anthony Slama.
Slama (L, 0-4), who lost twice last weekend at Pawtucket, started the top of the 9th by allowing a single by Jose Iglesias, his third hit of the night. Iglesias then stole second and took third on a fly out. After an intentional walk of Jackie Bradley Jr., who also had three hits, Drew Sutton doubled home the go-ahead run.
The Sox made it 7-2 with a two-run single by Ryan Lavarnway and, after an injury-related pitching change, two-run triple by Bryce Brentz off Daniel Turpen. Brentz then scored on a grounder by Mitch Maier.
Oscar Villareal (3-1) was credited with the win in relief of Terry Doyle, who didn't surrender a hit through the first 4 2/3 innings pitched. Chris Carpenter ended the night with a flourish, fanning all three batters faced.
The PawSox took a 2-0 lead when the first three batters reached in the 3rd inning and Bradley Jr. delivered a two-run single to left off Liam Hendriks, advancing to second on the throw home. With two on in scoring position and no outs, though, Pawtucket could not add on. The trend continued as the Sox left seven through eight innings.
Meanwhile, Rochester tied the game with a run in the 6th and another in the 7th.
Pawtucket (12-6) travels to Buffalo to begin a four-day series Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (0-0, 13.50) is scheduled to oppose Edgar Gonzalez (0-0, 11.25).
