Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The International League office announced today that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's (Triple-A/New York Yankees) Vidal Nuno has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week. He is the first RailRider to be honored by the IL. Buffalo's Luis Jimenez received the Batter of the Week accolades.
Nuno was dominant in his two starts, going 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA. On April 15 at Rochester he threw six shutout innings in the RailRiders' 10-1 win over the Red Wings. Nuno allowed just four hits and struck out a season-high eight batters. He followed that performance with another gem at home against Syracuse yesterday. The versatile southpaw surrendered one run on three hits over his 5.2 innings while striking out six in SWB's 5-1 triumph over the Chiefs.
On the season, Nuno is 2-0 with a sparkling 1.54 earned run average that ranks fifth in the loop. He trails only Indianapolis' Andy Oliver among active IL hurlers with 26 strikeouts. The former Baker University (Kan.) star has walked two batters over his 23.1 innings pitched for the league's best BB/9 IP ratio among starters (0.77). The IL has hit a slim .157 against him. Nuno won the 2013 James P. Dawson Award, which is given to the most outstanding Yankees rookie in big league spring training.
Nuno is the first SWB pitcher to receive weekly honors from the IL since Ramon Ortiz received a tip of the cap for his efforts from May 21-27, 2012.
The RailRiders conclude their four-game set with Syracuse tonight at 6:35 p.m. Fans will be able to dine on just a few dimes with dollar hot dogs all night long at PNC Field. Great ticket packages, group deals and single-game tickets are available.
