RHP Terry Doyle (0-0, 0.98) vs. RHP Liam Hendriks (0-0, 6.00)
TODAY'S GAME: The Red Wings, winners of 3 of their last 4 games following a 7-game losing streak, have a chance to earn their first series win of the season with a victory against Pawtucket Monday night in the series finale from Frontier Field. Meanwhile, after starting the year 9-1, the Paw Sox have now dropped 5 of their last 7 and have fallen into 2nd place in the IL North standings (1.0 GB of BUF). Today's game will conclude a 14-game stretch against either SWB or PAW -- a span in which the Wings have gone 4-9 so far... Next, Rochester will travel east on the NYS thruway to open a 4-game series at NBT Bank Stadium against the Syracuse Chiefs (Nationals) on Tuesday (6:00pm).
WITH A WIN TODAY, THE WINGS...:
-Will win their first series of the season and win their first 4-game series against PAW since 7/20-7/23/09. They also won a 5-game set @ PAW that year 8/18-8/21/09 winning 4 of 5 games...Ironically, both series involved a DH.
MORE FROM YESTERDAY:
- The shutout in game 2 was the Red Wings first shutout of the 2013 season... ROC tossed 10 shutouts in 2012
- Ray Olmedo collected 2 RBI in game 2 to become the first Red Wing other than Chris Colabello to pick up multiple RBI in a game since April 11 @ PAW
-Chris Colabello became the first Red Wing this season to pick up an RBI in 3 straight games with his Sac fly in Game 1
- The Wings walked a season-high 10 batters in Game 1, last season their 9-inn. game high was 8 (2x; last 8/19 vs SWB)... Rochester pitchers walked 12 in 19-inning game at Toledo on 8/5/12
STRANGE START: In Liam Hendriks' first start of the season for the Wings on 4/17 vs. SWB he didn't record a walk or a strikeout. It was just the second time in his pro career that he failed to register a strikeout. The other time came in a 2-inning outing on 8/6/11 @ Norfolk... It was the second time this season a Red Wings starter went 6 or more innings without recording a walk or strikeout.
MORE ON HENDRIKS: The 24-year-old was optioned to ROC after going 0-1, 4.66 ERA in 2 GS for the Twins this season. Hendriks has been a dominant force in the minor leagues with a career 2.65 ERA in 84 MiLB appearances including a 13-7, 2.95 (51 ER/155.2 IP) mark in 25 GS with the Wings from 2011-12. Last season, he went at least 7.0 innings, allowing 2 or fewer runs in 10 of his 16 starts with ROC and put together a 23.2 inning scoreless streak from 6/4-7/13 which included a 7-inning, CG, 4-hit shutout vs Columbus.
WONDERFUL WALTERS: RHP P.J. Walters tossed the first complete game shutout of his career in game 2 of yesterday's doubleheader and the first CG-SHO in the International League this season. After allowing a career-high 13 hits in his last start (4/15 vs SWB), Walters allowed just 2 hits and 5 base runners (one via error) Sunday. The 28-year-old struck out 5 and walked one while throwing 97 pitches (64 strikes). It was the 7th CG of Walters career and first since 5/22/12 when he went the distance against the Chicago White Sox while with the Twins.
-The last Red Wing to throw a 7-inning, 2-hitter was Tom Shearn on 8/6/08 vs LHV
-Four Red Wings threw CG's in 2012 (including Walters)... the last CG-SHO was thrown by RHP Nick Blackburn on 7/8/12 (G1) vs LHV (8 inn.)
DOYLE DEALIN': Paw Sox starter RHP Terry Doyle is off to a fantastic start allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits in 18.1 IP (3 GS) so far this season -- including allowing just one run on 2 hits in 5 innings against the Wings last Saturday. Currently, Doyle ranks 3rd in the IL in ERA (0.98), 2nd in BAA (.088) and 5th in WHIP (0.65).. The Massachusetts native was selected by the Twins in the 2011 Rule 5 draft but struggled in Spring Training in 2012 and was returned to the White Sox organization where he went 6-3, 2.83 ERA in 11 GS for Charlotte (AAA) last year before signing with Fukouka in Japan.
-On 5/28/12, Doyle tossed 7.1 no-hit innings against the Red Wings until Matt Carson's one-out double in the 8th
TRIPLE-LESS: The Red Wings are the only team in Triple-A yet to hit a Triple this season... In fact, the Wings are 1 of only 2 teams in all of minor league baseball this season without a three-bagger (Clinton; Midwest League)
-Last season, the Wings were T-5th in the IL with 27 triples... Clete Thomas led the Wings w/ 5 triples last year .
