Six Run Lead Evaporates

Giving up ten runs in the final four innings the Calgary Vipers were defeated 14-11 by the Edmonton Capitals before 1529 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers led 7-1 after two innings and 9-5 after five frames but were unable to hang onto the lead. With the loss the Snakes have dropped five straight games and at 20-13 fall to four and a half games behind the Chico Outlaws for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Jorge Mejia singled, stole second base, Brent Metheny reached on a fielding error, Kevin Price singled for a run batted in and Drew Miller grounded out for a RBI and a 2-0 advantage.

Edmonton responded in the next half inning with a run when Tom Collaro doubled and scored on a Enrique Cruz RBI single for a 2-1 score.

Right back came the Vipers with five runs in the second for a 7-1 lead as Caonabo Cosme, Matt Edgecombe, and Guillermo Reyes all singled to load the bases, both Mejia and Metheny knocked in two runs with doubles, and Metheny stole third base and scored on a throwing error.

The scoring continued in the third frame as the Capitals' Steve Brown reached on a fielding error by Mejia, Cliff Brumbaugh lined a two-run homer, Collaro doubled, and Cruz singled one in for a 7-4 game.

The Vipers got a run back in the bottom of the third when Cosme walked, Edgecombe singled, both runners advanced on a balk, and pitcher Dusty Gober laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt for a RBI and a 8-4 advantage.

Calgary made the score 9-4 in the fifth when Jonny Kaplan was hit by a pitch, Cosme singled, Gober sacrificed the runners into scoring position, and Kaplan scored on a passed ball.

Back came Edmonton in the sixth inning as Alex Prieto singled and with two outs the Capitals scored four runs for a 9-8 score when the pitcher Jesse Oster doubled for a RBI, Ryan Stevenson hit a two run shot, Steve Brown was hit by a pitch, and Brumbaugh doubled in one.

In the bottom of the frame the Snakes got two runs back for a 11-8 lead as Metheny, Price, and Miller hit three straight singles for a run and Price scored on an error.

The Capitals completed the comeback in the seventh as Prieto doubled, Josh Tarnow, and Stevenson walked to load the bases, Alex Chavez hit a sacrifice fly, and Collaro doubled in two for a 11-11 tie.

Leading off the top of the eighth inning Cruz hit a solo homerun to put Edmonton ahead 12-11.

Two more runs were added by the Capitals in the ninth as Brumbaugh walked and both Collaro and Matt Rogelstad doubled in runs for a 14-11 final.

On Wednesday June 30th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers will host a Canada Day Fireworks Spectacular following their game with the Edmonton Capitals.
