Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers had fought from behind twice.

Southern Maryland made certain it did not happen a third time.

The Blue Crabs exploded for six runs in the top of the tenth inning to defeat the Barnstormers, 10-4, Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Southern Maryland (4-5) climbed within one-half game of division-leading Sugar Land while the Barnstormers (4-6) slipped back into third place in the Freedom Division.

"They just came out swinging," said manager Butch Hobson about the 10th inning. "Woody (reliever Bryan Woodall) didn't use his sinker and hung his breaking ball. Southern Maryland squared some balls up."

Woodall (0-1) retired Antone DeJesus to open the 10th, but Casey Stevenson followed with a seeing-eye single into right. Jake Opitz roped his second home run of the season down the right field line to put the Blue Crabs back on top, 6-4.

The assault continued as Cyle Hankerd hit a 400-ft. triple to left center and scored on Gustavo Molina's double, also to the left center gap. Bryan Morgado took over and threw a wild pitch before loading the bases on two walks. Jamar Walton's one-hopper to third was misplayed by Tyler Bortnick as the fourth run of the inning crossed the plate. Casey Frawley looped a single over the scrambling Bortnick's glove to make it 9-4, and the final run crossed when second baseman Yusuke Kajimoto fumbled a routine grounder by Renny Osuna, who had run for Stevenson earlier in the inning.

Southern Maryland grabbed a 2-0 lead early off Chuck Fick, but Lance Zawadzki cranked his second homer of the season to right center in the home third to draw Lancaster within one.

Stevenson stretched the lead with an RBI single in the fifth, but the Barnstormers tied the game with two in the bottom of the sixth. Blake Gailen slugged a two-out homer to right. Brian Cavazos-Galvez followed with a single stole second, and eventually scored when Dan Coury greeted reliever Fernando Nieve with a single rolled over second base.

Zach Wilson rapped his second RBI double of the night in the top of the ninth, but David Cooper responded with a leadoff homer to right center in the bottom of the frame, sending the game to extra innings.

"After battling back like we did, you hate to see it end like that," said Hobson.

The series concludes on Sunday afternoon as right-hander Bryan Evans (0-2) makes the start for the Barnstormers against right-hander Jake Hale (1-0) of the Blue Crabs. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 12:45.
