Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Lancaster, PA)---There was plenty of offense to go around tonight in Lancaster as the Blue Crabs win game two of the three game series beating the Lancaster Barnstormers 10-4 in ten innings. It's the second win in extra innings for the Blue Crabs this season.
Cyle Hankerd got things started in the second with a single, followed by a Fred Lewis walk, and a Zach Wilson double scoring Hankerd to give the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead. The Blue Crabs would then score another run in the following inning as Antone DeJesus singled and later stole second. Two batters later, Jake Opitz would come to the plate and single to score DeJesus to bring the score to 2-0.
Lancaster would get on the board in bottom of the third as Lance Zawadzki led off the frame with his second homerun of the year. The Blue Crabs would then score another run in the top of the fifth on a Casey Stevenson single that scored Zach Wilson.
Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, starter Brian Baker got out the first two Barnstormers hitters. With the bases empty and two down, Blake Galien homered, followed by a single by Brian Cavazos-Galvez, and a walk to David Cooper thus ending the night of Baker who went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs, on five hits, walking two, and striking out five. With runners at first and second and two outs, Fernando Nieve came on to pitch out of the Blue Crabs bullpen, and gave up an RBI single to Dan Coury to tie the game at three.
Zach Wilson would drive in another run with an RBI Double in the top of the ninth to give the Blue Crabs the lead. It would not last long though, as David Cooper homered off closer Erik Hamren to tie and send the ballgame to extra innings tied at four apiece.
In the top of the tenth, combined with five hits and two errors by the Barnstormers, the Blue Crabs would score the most runs in an inning all season long, sending ten batters to the plate. With one out Casey Stevenson singled to start the rally. Renny Osuna would come on to pinch run, and the next batter Jake Opitz would hit a two run homerun, his second of the season to give the Blue Crabs the 6-4 lead. The hitting would continue as Cyle Hankerd would triple, followed by a Gustavo Molina double scoring Hankerd, and ending the outing of Bryan Woodall. Bryan Morgado would then come on to pitch, giving up a walk to Craig Maddox, and Fred Lewis to load the bases. Jamar Walton would then reach on an error by the third baseman Tyler Bortnick scoring Gustavo Molina. Casey Frawley would drive in the next run, and two batters and a new pitcher later, Renny Osuna would reach on an error by the second baseman scoring Fred Lewis to make it 10-4.
Justin Berg would come out of the bullpen and set the Barnstormers down in order in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win for the Blue Crabs. Closer Erik Hamren would blow the save in the ninth, but pick up his first win of the season. On the offensive side of things, Casey Stevenson went 2-5 out of the number two spot in the order, while the combination of Jake Opitz, and Cyle Hankerd each had two hits apiece. It was the first time this season that the Blue Crabs received a single, double, triple, and homerun from their lineup collectively in a game.
These two clubs will play game three of the three game series tomorrow afternoon. RHP Bryan Evans (0-2, 6.75) will throw for Lancaster, while RHP Jake Hale (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will take the bump for the Blue Crabs. First pitch set for 1:00 P.M.
