Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their fifth game in their last seven contests in a 10-2 loss to Long Island at Bethpage Ballpark. Andrew Carpenter took the loss, surrendering eight runs in the sixth inning on five extra base hits and recording just two outs. Ian Marshall earned the win for Long Island, giving up just one run and three hits in 6.0 innings of work.
After both starters exchanged zeroes for the first three frames, Sugar Land snapped a 13-inning scoreless streak by scratching across a run on a pair of Long Island errors in the fourth. Beamer Weems reached first as the leadoff man after a sharp line drive was too hot to handle for Ducks' shortstop, Dan Lyons. Following a flyout to shallow center field, Denny Almonte reached on a broken-bat single into center. The second miscue for Long Island came after Chris Wallace blasted a ball into right field that Bryan Sabatella was unable to field cleanly. Weems was only able to advance to third as he was unsure if the ball would be caught or not. Jon Weber drove in his first run in his second game with the Skeeters on a fielder's choice. Weber hustled down the line to avoid being doubled-up and allowing Weems to cross the plate and stake the Skeeters to a 1-0 advantage.
The early lead was short-live for Sugar Land, however. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Cody Puckett hit a long home run to left off Skeeters' starter, Shane Loux, to tie the game at one.
Loux turned in a quality outing, going five innings, allowing one run on the home run with two hits, two walks and striking out a pair.
Carpenter entered in the sixth and quickly surrendered the lead giving up five extra-base hits. The right-hander served up a five-pitch walk to Sabatella before a double into the left field corner by Prentice Redman. Lew Ford notched a double down the left field line to score both runners. Puckett hit his second home run of the night to push the score to 5-1. Jose Morales doubled into the left field alley and Blake Davis picked up an infield single off the third-base bag. Mike Blanke hit a shallow popup to center that dropped in for a hit, pushing across Morales and giving the Ducks a 6-1 cushion all before Carpenter recorded an out. After a pair of shallow fly outs, Sabatella hit a three-run home run to put Long Island on top 8-1, and chase Carpenter from the game after just 0.2 of an inning.
Sugar Land added a run in the eighth after Denny Almonte drove in Dustin Martin with a double.
Long Island added a run in the bottom half of the inning after back-to-back two out doubles by Redman and Alex Veg off Adrian Martin a to put the Ducks on top 10-2.
The Skeeters wrap up the three-game road trip tomorrow against the Ducks. First pitch is slated for 12:35 p.m. (CT). Fans can listen to the game online at SugarLandSkeeters.com.
