Missed Opportunities Doom Revs In Walk Off Defeat

May 2, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Twice the York Revolution had golden opportunities to take a lead, only to see the Somerset Patriots do so in the ensuing half inning. Unfortunately for the Revs, the second of those instances occurred in the ninth inning, as Somerset handed York a 3-2 walk-off defeat on Saturday night in front of 4,703 fans at TD Bank Ballpark. The Revs will look to avoid a sweep as they aim for their first road victory of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Both starters were outstanding, keeping the game scoreless into the sixth inning.

Logan Williamson retired the first nine batters he faced, before issuing a leadoff walk to Jonny Tucker in the bottom of the fourth. The southpaw promptly picked off his second runner in as many starts, which proved big as Nate Spears followed with a double. Williamson buckled down to record a pair of groundouts, keeping the scoreless deadlock intact.

The Revs missed a great chance to score the game's first run in the sixth as Brandon Boggs led off with a double to left-center. Patriots starter Randy Boone came back to retire Wilson Valdez on a groundout after a failed sacrifice attempt for the first out. After an intentional walk to Eric Patterson put two runners aboard, Andres Perez nailed a line drive to left field, but directly at left fielder Aharon Eggleston. Boggs was attempting to steal on the pitch, and was doubled off at second base as Boone escaped unscathed.

Somerset scored the game's first run in its half of the sixth inning, after it appeared that the Revs might dodge a bullet. With one out and Adam Donachie on at first after drawing a leadoff walk, Tucker drove a ball to the alley in left-center for a double. Attempting to score all the way from first, Donachie was thrown out at the plate as Boggs fired to Valdez who completed a perfect relay home for the second out. Tucker would end up scoring, however, as Spears followed with a ground ball along the line at first base that glanced off Perez' glove for an error. The unearned run gave Somerset a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots added a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI double down the left field line by Donachie, putting the Revs in a 2-0 hole.

York rallied in the eighth against a Patriots bullpen that to that point, had allowed just one earned run in 27.0 innings to start the season. Willie Cabrera ignited things with a base hit through the left side and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Eric Patterson to slice the deficit to 2-1. Perez followed with a sharp grounder past the third base bag for a game-tying RBI double, leveling the score at 2-2 in clutch fashion.

The Revs seemed poised to take their first lead in the top of the ninth as Bryan Pounds worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a base hit to right by Johan Limonta. Reliever R.J. Seidel came back to record consecutive strikeouts and an inning-ending groundout, however, keeping the game tied.

Aharon Eggleston led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to right-center, putting Somerset in position for the winning run. Greg Hopkins followed with a swinging bunt, and with pitcher Leyson Septimo attempting to toss to third for the lead out, Eggleston was ruled safe on a close play. Septimo came back to strike out Robert Andino, and after Hopkins took second on a defensive indifference, the Revs intentionally walked Donachie to set up the force at every base. Septimo fell behind David Vidal 3-0, and after coming back to run the count full, allowed a line drive to left over the head of Brandon Jones to end the game, with Vidal picking up the game-winning RBI on the walk-off single.

Septimo (0-1) suffered the loss, while Seidel (1-0) earned the win for the Patriots.

Williamson allowed just one unearned run on two hits over six innings. He has now given up just two runs (one earned) in 11.0 innings over two starts despite having not recorded a win.

Boone was also solid, striking out six and allowing only four hits over six-plus shutout frames.

The Revs out-hit the Patriots 8-6 in the loss. Patterson (2-for-3), Limonta (2-for-4), and Cabrera (2-for-4) all posted multi-hit efforts for York.

Revs righty Mike McClendon (0-0, 1.80) makes the start on Sunday, opposite Patriots right-hander Lucas Irvine (0-1, 4.50) with first pitch at 1:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 12:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
