Six-Run Inning Not Enough for the Missions against Springfield
April 30, 2022 - Texas League (TL)
San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - In front of a sold-out crowd Friday night, the Missions attempted to collect their third consecutive win against Springfield. After trailing 4-0, the Missions used a six-run seventh inning to gain a 6-5 lead. The Missions bullpen allowed two runs to score in the eighth inning and that was enough for Springfield to take down the Missions Friday night.
Following two terrific pitching performances from Dwayne Matos and Matt Waldron, Gabriel Morales looked to do the same against Springfield. The southpaw pitched out of danger in the first inning after walking two batters. He retired all three batters in the second inning but then ran into some trouble in the third inning.
Morales allowed four runs on five hits as Springfield took an early lead. With two runners on base, Moises Gomez doubled to score the first run of the game. Pedro Pages scored two more runs after hitting a single into center field. Morales was pulled from the game after allowing a base hit to Matt Koperniak. With Moises Lugo in the game, the final run of the inning scored after Koperniak stole second base. On the play, Yorman Rodriguez was charged with a throwing error and Pages came in to score.
It took the Missions until the sixth inning to breakthrough on the scoreboard but they did so in a big way. The Missions offense scored six runs on six hits to take a 6-5 lead. With Michael Brettell in the game, Korry Howell was hit by a pitch which put a runner on base with one out. After a strikeout, Connor Hollis hit a double to extend the inning. Esteury Ruiz drove in both runners with a base hit to left field. Chris Givin extended the inning with a base hit. Yorman Rodriguez drove in both runners after hitting a double. Tirso Ornelas scored Rodriguez with an RBI single. Lastly, Juan Fernandez hit an RBI double.
The Missions lead did not last long, however, after Mason Fox entered the game in the eighth inning. Fox allowed a single and a walk to the first two batters. After striking out Jordan Walker, Gomez drove in a run with an RBI double. Pages drove in the second run of the inning after hitting a sacrifice fly. The Missions trailed 7-6.
