San Antonio Missions News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions finished up their opening month with a thrilling victory against the Springfield Cardinals. After trailing through the first half of the game, the Missions fought back and scored seven runs across the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. San Antonio finishes the month with a 7-3 win over Springfield.
Gabe Mosser was the starting pitcher Saturday night for the Missions and he was opposed by Garrett Williams for Springfield. Both pitchers kept the runs off the scoreboard in an early pitcher's duel. Both teams were held hitless until the fourth inning.
After being held without a hit for the first three innings, Springfield recorded the first hit of the game in the fourth inning. Jordan Walker hit a lead-off double off Mosser to immediately place a runner in scoring position. The Missions shutout attempt came to an end once Moises Gomez stepped up to the plate. Gomez connected on a two-run over the center field wall. His 11th long ball of the season made it a 2-0 Springfield lead. Pedro Pages followed that up with a solo home run to left field. This was the first time this season the Missions allowed back-to-back home runs. The Missions trailed 3-0.
The Missions offense struggled against Williams and didn't put a runner on base until the fifth inning. Tirso Ornelas was hit by a pitch to get the inning started. Newcomer Domingo Leyba picked up the first hit for the Missions with a single to right field. With runners on the corners and no outs, San Antonio had a chance to cut into the deficit. Instead, Jorge Ona and Korry Howell both struck out. With Connor Hollis at the plate, a ball in the dirt prompted Leyba to advance to second base. On the play, Ornelas was tagged out trying to score.
In the top of the sixth inning, Osvaldo Hernandez replaced Mosser. For Hernandez, this was his first relief appearance of the season. He struck out the side in his first inning of work. He also pitched a scoreless inning in the seventh after working out of a one-out jam.
The Missions scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Facing Edgar Escobar, Hollis and Chandler Seagle each singled to start off the inning. Esteury Ruiz flew out and Hollis advanced to third on the play. He came around to score after Chris Givin grounded into a fielder's choice. The Missions trailed 3-1.
San Antonio continued their comeback attempt and took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. San Antonio scored four runs on three hits to take a 5-3 advantage. Ornelas hit a single and advanced to second base due to a balk. Leyba drew a walk to put two runners on base. Korry Howell drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single. Howell stole second base and, on the play, Leyba came around to score thanks to two throwing errors from Springfield. Later on, Seagle was hit by a pitch and came around to score after Esteury Ruiz hit a double.
The Missions added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Yorman Rodriguez started off the inning with a double. Ornelas continued his hot hitting by connecting on a two-run home run. His second long ball of the season made it a 7-3 Missions lead.
