Lancaster Stormers News Release
Southern Maryland needed to use one member of its bullpen to start on Wednesday night. Five of Logan Williamson's mates followed him into the game.
Lancaster was unable to score on any of them. The sextet of Blue Crabs combined on a seven-hit shutout as Southern Maryland took the middle game of the three-game series, 6-0, at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The Barnstormers remained one game over .500 with the loss while Southern Maryland remained two games ahead of Long Island in the Liberty Division race.
Williamson carried the ball for the first four innings, yielding only four singles while striking out seven. Beau Vaughan worked a hitless fifth inning, but ran into trouble in the sixth. Charlie Manning marched in for one batter before turning the mound over to Kyle Zaleski. The right-hander picked up four outs and was awarded the win. Kyle Mertins worked the eighth for the Blue Crabs, and Eduardo Morlan picked up the ninth inning.
For the night, the Barnstormers managed six singles and a double, drew three walks and had one batter hit by a pitch. They had runners in scoring position before the second out in six different innings but went 1-for-15 in RBI opportunities.
Lancaster's biggest chance came in the sixth. Travis Denker walked to open the frame and sprinted to third on Daryle Ward's single to right. Vaughan struck out Ryan Harvey for the first out, and Manning got Kevin Howard looking for the second. Zaleski hit Kody Kirkland with a breaking ball to load the bases but got Gustavo Molina to pop to short, ending the threat.
The Blue Crabs got to Alan Johnson (1-3) in the third. Lancaster's right-hander walked Mike Richard leading off the inning. With the runner in motion, Sean Smith hit a sharp grounder toward the middle which was misplayed by Tsuyoshi Takashima for an error. Both runners moved ahead on Renny Osuna's bunt to first. Lancaster opted to walk Jose Julio-Ruiz intentionally, but the move backfired as Ryan Mulhern singled home a pair, and Cyle Hankerd another on back-to-back singles to center.
Alvin Colina's triple to right center combined with a single by Sean Smith in the fourth to put the Crabs ahead, 4-0, and Hankerd led off the fifth with a long homer. The final run scored in the eighth on a bad throw from Harvey on a single by Julio-Ruiz.
Dwayne Pollok (6-2) will take the mound for the Barnstormers in the rubber game of the series Thursday evening at 7:05. He will be opposed by right-hander Daryl Thompson (4-4). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: The Barnstormers are 3-2 on the road trip...Ward reached an eight-game hitting streak for the third time this season...Blake Gailen had the club's only extra base hit, a double in the seventh...It was his eighth extra base hit (6 2B, 2 HR) in eight games...The Barnstormers struck out 14 times, a season high...Ross Peeples made his 283rd appearance as a Barnstormer.
