Simmons' Hit Seals Another Dramatic Comeback as Revs Sweep 'Fish

September 7, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

As the York Revolution looked to sweep the Bridgeport Bluefish in four games on a holiday Monday, it appeared the Revs would have to instead settle for a 4-3 week at home after two costly errors in the seventh inning. True to their 2015 form however, the Revolution exploded for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and completed their 11th walk-off win of the year with an 8-7 victory, completing the homestand with a 5-2 record.

Bridgeport drew first blood in the second, collecting four hits off York starter Frank Gailey. The big blows both came with two out, a Juan Martinez two-run bloop single and an Ethan Chapman triple into the right field corner which scored Martinez. C.J. Retherford and Andres Rodriguez began the inning with back-to-back singles.

Trailing 3-0, the Revs wasted little time responding, as Bryan Pounds (3-for-5, 2 RBI) led off the home half of the second with his 12th home run of the season to left-center, a bomb closer to straightaway center field just to the left of the batter's eye.

The Bluefish tacked on two more runs in the third however, taking a 5-1 lead on a Wellington Dotel RBI triple after a leadoff walk, and Dotel eventually scored himself on a wild pitch.

York cut the lead to two for a second time in the fourth, when James Simmons (3-for-5, RBI) got things started with a leadoff double to deep left. He eventually scored on a Wilson Valdez (4-for-5, RBI) run-scoring single on the ground up the middle, following an Eric Patterson walk. Patterson then scored on a sac-fly to left by Andres Perez, who drove in his Atlantic League-leading 75th run of 2015. Simmons, Patterson and Valdez all stole bases in the inning to help make the score 5-3.

It was 5-4 after Pounds pounded his second mammoth homer of the day in the 5th, way out to the left field alley. Pounds' 13th dinger of the season also marked his second multi-homer game of 2015.

The Revolution chased Bluefish starter Robert Carson from the game early, as he threw over 100 pitches in just four and a third innings of work. He surrendered nine hits, four runs all earned, and walked four to go with two strikeouts. York starter Frank Gailey went six innings, allowing five earned runs on just six hits, but struck out six with a lone walk.

Mistakes appeared to sink the Revs for good in the seventh; Bridgeport sent seven batters to the plate and scored twice without registering a base hit. Two walks, a sacrifice and an error, a hit by pitch and another error in that order ended up making it a 7-4 game before reliever Edward Paredes recorded a strikeout and induced a 6-4-3 double play ball with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.

After Ron Schreurs faced the minimum six batters in the eighth and ninth, the stage was set for the Revolution's record-extending 11th walk-off win of 2015. (The 2009 Revs walked-off eight times). The bases were loaded in the blink of an eye after a Perez single, a Brandon Boggs walk and a Pounds single. Nash followed Pounds and wore one on the back for an RBI hit by pitch, before Salvador Paniagua stepped in and stroked a two-run single to left, tying the game 7-7. Nick Ferdinand then made the only out of the inning for York - on a successful sacrifice bunt - moving Paniagua and pinch-runner Mikey Reynolds to second and third base respectively.

With the walk-off sac-fly available for Simmons, he decided to take some drama out of it by blasting a fly ball the other way onto the right field warning track, allowing Reynolds to trot home and set off yet another blue and gold sea of humanity spilling onto the field, which has been more the rule than exception this season at Santander Stadium.

Another home thriller improved York's record to 23-11 in games decided in the last at-bat this season, and the Revolution also improved to 14-4 in one run games at home in 2015. Patrick Mincey (1-1) was charged with the loss after the ninth inning implosion, as Schreurs (4-0) kept his record flawless.

While York's second half playoff chances are dwindling, at 32-24 this half the Revs were more than happy to play the role of spoiler against the 'Fish; York came from behind to win all four games (two of the four in walk-off fashion) to put Bridgeport all but out of the race, as they now trail Somerset by five and a half games with 13 to play in the Liberty Division second half standings. The Revolution are still alive, as they trail Lancaster by 4.5 games with 14 to play, although a tie in the standings would go to Lancaster due to the first tiebreaker of head-to-head record.

Notes: The comeback win is the Revs' 30th of the season, approaching the club record of 36 set in 2008 and 2014. All four wins in the series vs. Bridgeport occurred in comeback fashion, including three wins coming from down three runs or more. All four occurred in the final at-bat including two walk-offs. Monday's comeback erased a four-run deficit, tying the Revs' largest comeback win of the year (August 5 vs. Southern Maryland). The Revs' comeback from down three in the ninth inning tied the second biggest comeback in club history in the ninth inning or later, one short of matching the record; it is the Revs' biggest ninth inning comeback since a record four-run comeback on May 4, 2011 vs. Somerset. The sweep is the Revs' fourth of the season and second in a four-game series (also Aug. 5-8 vs. Southern Maryland). The Revs have cracked a league-best 15 homers in seven games in September, and belted 10 homers in the four-game sweep. York finishes the season series 9-5 vs. Bridgeport. Nash extends a five-game RBI streak. Boggs (1-for-3) extends a seven-game hitting streak. Paniagua (3-for-5) went 12-for-24 with 11 RBI in six games played on the seven-game homestand and is now batting .375 over his last 24 games. Of the 11 walk-off wins, 10 different players have totaled walk-off RBI. York righty Cody Scarpetta (1-5, 4.47) will face Somerset southpaw Matt Zielinski (7-2, 2.32) in Tuesday's opening game of a six-game road trip, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
