Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB.: The Edmonton Oil Kings and the Everett Silvertips had an old fashioned goaltenders dual between two 17 year old Alberta born goalies. Calgary native Cam Lanigan of the Oil Kings and Edmonton born Kent Simpson of Everett stared each other down from either end for all three periods, and and overtime, but neither would flinch. It took a spectacular move from Kellan Tochkin of the Sivertips in the shootout to decide it. The Sivertips won this one 2-1 in a shootout.
"Tochkin really fooled me on that one," said Lanigan. "I was talking to Cumiskey, who played with him in the summer, and he said he likes to shoot but when he came in and faked I dropped and reached for it, but he had me."
The Silvertips scored first at the midway point of the opening period. Radko Gudas fired one from the point, Tyler Maxwell jammed away at the rebound, and Tochkin eventually put the loose puck past Lanigan.
The Oil Kings tied it up late in the second period when rookie Michael St. Croix tipped a Mark Pysyk point shot past Simpson. The assist gave Pysyk a point in three straight games.
Logan Proulx had a golden opportunity to give Edmonton the lead on a third period breakaway, but Simpson robbed him with a great glove save on a shot that was labeled for the top corner. The third period and overtime solved nothing and it ended up tied 1-1. Lanigan made 38 saves through 65 minutes and Simpson stopped 37 pucks. In the shootout, Lanigan stopped Maxwell before Tochkin scored the winner. Brent Raedeke, Tomas Vincour and St. Croix could not solve Simpson.
Edmonton will play their next seven games away from Rexall Place in two seperate road trips. The first journey begins in Calgary this Wednesday against the Hitmen. Then the bus heads to BC for three games in three nights. The Oil Kings play the Kamloops Blazers Friday, the Chilliwack Bruins Saturday and the Vancouver Giants on Sunday.
