Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Lethbridge, Alberta -- The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out their season high 7-game Western Hockey League road trip Saturday night with a 5-4 victory over the hometown Hurricanes in Lethbridge.
Brandon jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead, outshot the 'Canes 39-21, got two goals from Swedish defenceman Alexander Urbom and saw newly acquired center Paul Van de Velde notch his first goal as a Wheat King as they bounced back from Friday's 2-1 loss to the Ice in Cranbrook.
With Saturday's win, the Wheat Kings finished the road trip with a 4-2-0-1 record, collecting nine of a possible 14 points. Overall, Brandon is 10-7-0-2, good for 22 points and a second place tie with Moose Jaw in the WHL's Eastern Division.
Brayden Schenn and Aaron Lewadniuk, with his second goal in as many nights, also scored for the Wheat Kings, who led 2-0 and 3-2 at the period breaks.
Mitch Maxwell scored three goals in a losing cause for the Hurricanes, who remain last in the Eastern Conference standings.
In Friday's game, Dustin Sylvester's powerplay goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation time was the difference.
The Wheat Kings will now return home after thirteen days on the road and begin preparations for a 5-game homestand that begins this coming weekend with games against Prince Albert and Medicine Hat on Friday and Saturday nights.
Tickets to both games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or by going online at ticketmaster.ca
