Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips (@WHLSilvertips), six-time U.S. Division champion and defending Western Conference champions of the Western Hockey League, announced in conjunction with the WHL and Canadian Hockey League that Silvertips forwards Connor Dewar and Riley Sutter have been named to Team WHL for the upcoming 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series, starting Monday, Nov. 5 in Kamloops.
Dewar and Sutter will join Team WHL as part of an assortment of NHL prospects from Canada selected in the NHL Draft or eligible for the 2019 NHL Draft, scheduled to compete against the Russian National Junior Team. Team WHL is part of a selection process including prospects from the Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, vying for a roster spot with Team Canada at the upcoming World Junior Championships.
Dewar and Sutter's selection marks the fourth consecutive season the Silvertips will be represented in the series, joining defenseman Noah Juulsen (2015-16) and goaltender Carter Hart (2015-17). Juulsen and Hart were named to Team Canada for the 2016 World Junior Championships, while Hart steered Team Canada to the gold medal in last year's event in Buffalo.
Dewar, 19, is in his first season as captain of the Silvertips and leads the club with 14 points in nine games, additionally racking up a Silvertips leading seven goals and 47 shots (2nd, WHL). The 5-foot-10, 176 pound forward was selected in the third round (92nd overall) by the Minnesota Wild in the 2018 NHL Draft and has competed in 230 career WHL games with 130 points, 70 goals, a +18 rating, and 118 penalty minutes.
Last season, Dewar helped guide the Tips to their second Western Conference title in franchise history, earned the game winning goal in their first WHL Championship Series victory, and was named the Silvertips Most Dedicated Player when he shattered career highs in points (68), assists (30) and goals (38), leading the Silvertips in goals while becoming the youngest player in Silvertips history to reach the 38-goal mark. In the postseason, he was second on the program in points (26) and goals (12) in all 22 games, leading the entire league in plus-minus (+24) and shots on goal (106).
Sutter, who turns 19 on Oct. 25, is second on the Silvertips in points (12), is first in assists (8), game winning goals (2), face-off wins (135), and power play points (7). He was selected as the second pick in back-to-back Silvertips selections in the third round of the draft, selected in the third round (93rd overall) by the Washington Capitals. Last season, he completed his third season with the Silvertips helping guide the club to their second Western Conference title and sixth U.S. Division championship with career highs in goals (25), assists (28), points (53) and plus-minus (+22) in 68 games. He went 52.4 percent at the face-off circle (715 of 1,364) and his five game winning goals were tied for fourth on the Silvertips.
The 6-foot-3, 205 pound forward had a +17 rating and was tied for third in the WHL Playoffs as he earned 19 points (9g-10a) in 21 postseason games, also leading the Silvertips in playoff game winning goals (3). During regular season play, he was one of four Silvertips to earn a hat trick and his career high five point game (4g-1a) on Dec. 27 included four goals, tying the franchise record for most goals in a game.
Sutter has 108 points, 50 goals, 130 penalty minutes, and a +20 rating in 175 career WHL games, all as a Silvertip. His father, Ron, also skated in the WHL with Lethbridge and competed for 19 seasons as a forward and two-year captain in the National Hockey League with Philadelphia, St. Louis, Quebec, Boston, Phoenix, San Jose, Calgary and the New York Islanders.
