Everett Silvertips News Release

PORTLAND - Justyn Gurney and Bryce Kindopp scored a pair of early goals but the overtime winner by Reece Newkirk completed a comeback for the Portland Winterhawks, 3-2 in overtime over the Everett Silvertips before 6,105 fans at Moda Center on Friday in WHL action.

The Tips finished a five game road swing at 4-0-1, earning 33 saves in net from Dustin Wolf while Kindopp's goal gave him 10 points in the last five games. Jaydon Dureau tied the game with 56 seconds remaining in regulation while the Tips killed off three penalties in regulation, before Newkirk's goal, scored on a four-on-three situation.

UP NEXT: The Tips open the homestand tomorrow for Teddy Bear Toss presented by Ace Hardware against the Vancouver Giants, 7:05 p.m. (KRKO / WHL Live) in downtown Everett. Tickets are on sale with a large crowd expected, available at the link below.

The Silvertips were terrific with stalling the Winterhawks high tempo attack and forced several turnovers in the first few minutes on errant passes out of the zone. They eventually capitalized when Cole Fonstad, stationed in the left corner, found Justyn Gurney at the base of the left circle, who roofed his third goal of the season over Isaiah DiLaura's glove at 8:23 of the first period.

A Jalen Price to Parker Hendren 2-on-1 goal was washed out at the end of the first period, unable to beat the clock, but the Tips materialized a 2-0 lead on Kindopp's 21st goal of the year, a snapshot through traffic that snuck past DiLaura's blocker at 3:15.

Robbie Fromm-Delorme finished a give-and-go with Reece Newkirk at 13:29 to get the Winterhawks down by a goal, but the Silvertips stood up to Portland's push by limiting the Winterhawks to just eight shots in the final period. Unfortunately, their last one found the back of the net for an extra attacker goal with 56 seconds remaining. The Tips, unable to clear the zone on a pair of chances, surrendered the lead on Dureau's one-timer at the right circle, set up by Tyson Kozak's feed out of the corner.

The Tips drew a penalty on Dureau for slashing just 56 seconds into the overtime but fell short on the ensuing four-on-three situation. Portland then earned a power play and ended the game on Newkirk's snap shot from the left circle, through traffic, at 4:08 of overtime.

THREE STARS:

1. Reece Newkirk (POR)

2. Justyn Gurney (EVT)

3. Jaydon Dureau (POR)

NOTES: Scratched from the lineup were Braden Holt, Michal Gut, Tyson Phare, Martin Fasko-Rudas (World Juniors), and Carter Halamandaris ... Fonstad's assist gave him eight points in the last five games ... the Tips have lost in regulation just twice on the road, in 14 games.
