Swift Current Broncos News Release
EDMONTON, AB - The Swift Current Broncos (6-21-1-2) had a strong opening 20 minutes against the Edmonton Oil Kings (21-6-5-2) Friday night, but three goals against in the second period was their undoing in a 5-1 loss.
The first period featured multiple scoring chances for both teams as they traded chances over the 20 minutes. Edmonton hit the post on one occasion, but Isaac Poulter was able to track the loose puck and cover it. The shots read 16-12 for the Oil Kings through 20.
Caleb Wyrostok nearly scored for the second straight game, but missed the net on a centring pass early in the second period. Not long after, Edmonton scored.
Off a faceoff in the Broncos zone, David Kope threw the puck on net from the left boards and it was deflected by Ethan McIndoe and threw the legs of Poulter. There was a brief review to ensure it wasn't touched with a high stick, but the goal stood.
Nearly 10 minutes later the Oil Kings got a power play. Riley Sawchuk's shot from the left circle was blocked by Kaleb Bulych and deflected right to Carter Souch who lifted it over the glove of Poulter and in.
In the dying seconds of the period, Dylan Guenther added another to give the Oil Kings a 3-0 lead heading into the third.
The Broncos cut into Edmonton's lead early in the third when Hendrik De Klerk's shot from the blue line snuck past a screened Sebastian Cossa.
Swift Current had a great chance to further cut into the lead with two power plays less than two minutes apart, but couldn't take advantage.
The Oil Kings received a power play of their own shortly after, and just 11 seconds into it Matthew Robertson's one timer beat a screened Poulter to make it 4-1.
Keegan Slaney capped off the scoring with a long wrist shot from the blue line with just 11 seconds left.
The Broncos look to finish off the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule on a high note when they visit the Red Deer Rebels (11-17-0-3) Saturday night. Red Deer is coming off a 5-4 win over Medicine Hat.
