Beckman's Hat Trick Leads Chiefs to Sixth-Straight Victory

December 14, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman matched a career high with five points including his second hat trick to lead the Spokane Chiefs past the Seattle Thunderbirds, 5-2 on the road on Saturday night. The Chiefs are now 17-0 when scoring four or more goals and have won six in a row, marking their longest winning streak since the 2014-15 season (seven games).

Beckman opened the scoring and gave Spokane a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, firing a rocket past Seattle goalie Blake Lyda from the right circle. Eli Zummack earned the primary assist with a perfect setup feed from the high slot.

Seattle evened things just under six minutes into the second as Andrej Kukuca found a seam between the Spokane defense and wired one over Spokane netminder Campbell Arnold's glove.

Beckman responded with back-to-back power play scores to secure the hat trick at 12:09 and 16:06. The first came on a 5-on-3, with the Saskatoon product circling the middle of the zone before snapping the puck inside the top-right corner.

The hat trick came on a deflection of a Bobby Russell point shot minutes later. Breakout rookie forward Bear Hughes -- who had three assists on the night -- slid the puck from the left wall up high to Russell, who was back in the lineup sporting a full face shield after missing Tuesday's game with an injury. Russell teed up a slapshot to the front of the net and a waiting Beckman, who tipped it low for his 19th of the season.

Cordel Larson got in on the fun to make it 4-1, capitalizing on a perfect centering feed from Beckman to get his eighth of the season past Lyda on a second-chance opportunity. [related_links]

Kukuca picked up his second of the night on a nice backhand chance early in the third but that's all Spokane would give, sealing the win with an empty net goal from Eli Zummack late.

Spokane will face Everett on Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) before heading to Vancouver Island to take on the Victoria Royals on Tuesday and Wednesday to close out the first half of the regular season.
