Silver Hawks slug past Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK - For the first time since last June, the Whitecaps have lost three consecutive home games following an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the South Bend Silver Hawks. Matt Oxendine went 2-for-5 with a double and a three run homer, which put the Silver Hawks in front, 8-2 in the top of the eighth inning. Homer, Michigan native Josh Collmenter won for the first time in three starts against the Whitecaps even though he fell behind 2-0 in the fourth inning. Collmenter went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Chris Carlson hit his fourth home run of the season with one out in the fourth to give West Michigan a 1-0 lead. Jordan Newton then drove in Casper Wells with an RBI single to center field, which put the ‘Caps in front, 2-0. Aaron Hanke put the Silver Hawks on the board with his fifth home run of the season in the top off the fifth off Whitecaps starting pitcher Manny Miguelez. An error led to the tying run, which scored on a ground out by Mike Mee later in the inning. The West Michigan bullpen gave way beginning in the sixth inning. Ramon Ramirez put South Bend on top, 3-2 with an RBI double off Miguelez, who left the game with two runners on base. Two batters later, Mauricio Robles allowed a two run double, which made the lead, 5-2. Santo Mieses gave up the home run by Oxendine in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ronnie Bourquin walked to drive in a ‘Caps run with no outs, but Jeff Dietz buckled down to retire three in a row and end the threat. The last time the Whitecaps lost three consecutive home games was 11-15, 2007 when the club dropped four in a row at Fifth Third Ballpark. South Bend is just 2-7 against West Michigan this season.
