Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - For the second straight contest, the Lansing Lugnuts could not overcome an early deficit as they dropped a 7-4 decision at Oldsmobile Park to the Great Lakes Loons in the first meeting between the teams this season.
Great Lakes scored three times in the first inning to take command in the game's outset. Erik Kanaby and Jovanny Rosario each had infield singles, bringing up Andrew Lambo. Lambo's single to right scored Kanaby and quickly made it 1-0. After Rosario scored on a double play, Alfredo Silverio blasted a solo homer to left to push the lead to 3-0.
All of the Loons runs in the game would come against Lansing starter Randy Boone, who was tapped for four more in the seventh after retiring 12 straight at one point in the contest. Kanby's RBI single gave the Loons a 4-0 lead, and Rosario's two-run base hit extended the advantage to 6-0. Lambo capped off the inning with a run scoring double to make it 7-0.
Lansing's only runs of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when they answered the Loons with four runs of their own. Down 7-1, the Lugnuts loaded the bases with one man out for Justin Jackson. He then ripped a bases clearing double into right-center field that cut the lead to 7-4.
The Lugnuts would have opportunities to tie the game in the eighth and ninth innings, as they brought the tying run to the plate in each inning with only one man out. However the offense could not drive home a run in either frame.
Steven Johnson (6-2) got the win for the Loons after throwing 6 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. All of the runs against him scored in the seventh, his final inning.
Boone (5-2) took the loss for the Lugnuts. He gave up seven runs on 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings of work. It is the most runs that he has surrendered in any outing this season.
Miguel Ramirez threw the ninth for his league-leading 11th save of the year.
Lansing (28-24) and Great Lakes (24-27) will continue the series on Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park. Left-hander Luis Perez (1-4, 5.15) will hurl for the Lugnuts, while southpaw Victor Garate (2-0, 2.18) will take the mound for the Loons.
It will also be a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, with beer and soda on-sale for just $2. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
