Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
MANCHESTER, NH-New Hampshire rightfielder Moises Sierra powered a two-out solo homer in the tenth inning to snap Binghamton's three-game losing streak and send the Fisher Cat past the B-Mets 5-4 in 10 innings. Binghamton had a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the eighth, but the bullpen could not hold it for Brad Holt, who pitched terrifically again.
The B-Mets got onto the board early against starter B.J. LaMura in the first inning. Josh Satin lined a double to left with one out and scored on Eric Campbell's subsequent RBI single to center.
New Hampshire (8-5) answered in the last of the frame. Anthony Gose doubled to lead off the inning against Holt. After stealing third, Gose scored on a Sierra fielder's choice to short.
Holt handed the Fisher Cats the lead in the third inning courtesy of a throwing error. The righty walked Mark Sobolewski to start the inning. Two batters later, Adeiny Hechavarria reached on a bunt single, putting two on and one out. Sobolewski tagged up on a Sierra flyball to reach third with two outs. He scored when Holt threw the ball into centerfield in an effort to catch Hechavarria stealing at second. The error pushed New Hampshire in front 2-1.
Binghamton (5-7) broke back in the sixth inning, however, against the Fisher Cats bullpen. Brahiam Maldonado, Mike Fisher and Kai Gronauer hit singles in succession off Matt Daly to tie the game. Evan Crawford replaced Daly and allowed the B-Mets to take the lead on a fourth consecutive single from Carlos Guzman, who guided a groundball through the left side, making it 3-2.
Holt exited after six innings in line for the win. He allowed two runs - one earned - on two hits and struck out six. LaMura, by contrast, tossed just four innings of one-run work.
Raul Reyes added to the lead in the seventh. Jesus Feliciano doubled off Crawford to start the stanza. Crawford retired the next two hitters, but could not get Reyes, who singled to left to up the advantage to two.
Unfortunately, the two-run lead did not stand up. The Fisher Cats rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth against Roy Merritt to even the score. It marked Merritt's second blown save of the season and the team's sixth in just 12 games.
Ricky Brooks followed Merritt and retired all six batters he faced until running into Sierra in the tenth. The Dominican outfielder smashed the first pitch from Brooks out of the yard to left-center for the game-winner.
The B-Mets ripped a season-best 13 hits in the losing effort, led by Satin who had three base knocks.
Binghamton will look to even the series Friday at 6:35 PM in Game 2 of the three-game set. LHP Robert Carson (1-1, 0.90) will start opposite RHP Chad Beck (1-0, 1.13) of New Hampshire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
