Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SPRINGDALE, AR - Jake Buchanan and Carlos Quevedo teamed for Corpus Christi's ninth shutout victory of the season as the Hooks swept Northwest Arkansas with a 5-0 triumph at Arvest Ballpark.
Buchanan (6-0) yielded just one hit over five innings, lowering his ERA to a Minor League best 0.77. He has not allowed an earned run over his last seven appearances.
Corpus Christi (33-20) established a 2-0 lead in the third. Naturals starter Jason Adam (0-7) retired the first seven men he faced before Enrique Hernandez looped a single into shallow right field. With two away, Jio Mier ripped a double over the head of left-fielder Carlo Testa. Rene Garcia was next and served a single into right field to score Mier and extend his on-base streak to 30 games - tops in the Texas League.
George Springer put the Hooks up 3-0 in the sixth with a two-out home run to left field. His 16th home run was a laser shot which sailed over the Hooks bullpen and onto the high concourse above the wall.
Erik Castro led off the seventh with a bomb onto the berm in right field.
Edwin Carl entered the game for Northwest Arkansas (15-36) in the eighth. Drew Muren greeted him with a double off the fence in the right field corner. Mier lined a single into center, placing runners at the corners for Garcia, who walked to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Domingo Santana hit a sharp ground ball to third base. Orlando Calixte stepped on the bag for the force play but airmailed the throw to first, allowing Santana to reach and Muren to score.
Quevedo notched his first save by spreading two hits and one walk over four innings. He struck out four.
The Hooks, who have won eight of their last nine contests, begin a three-game series Friday night in North Little Rock. Bobby Doran (6-1) gets the start opposite Travs right-hander Brandon Hynick (4-3). First pitch is 7:10.
