Biloxi Shuckers News Release
PENSACOLA, FLA. - The first place Biloxi Shuckers had their franchise-best five-game winning streak halted in game two of Sunday's doubleheader in Pensacola. The clubs split a pair of 2-1 decisions as Brooks Hall joined Tyler Wagner as a three-game winner on the mound, picking up the win in game one. 20-year-old Orlando Arcia went hitless in the two games and had his league-best on-base streak of 16 games end in game two of the doubleheader. After the twin bill Sunday, the Shuckers hold a one-game edge over the Mobile BayBears in the South Division of the Southern League. The 11-6 record remains the best in the league.
Game 1: Shuckers 2, Blue Wahoos 1
For the eighth time in 16 games, the Shuckers scored first with a run in the second. Nick Ramirez (0x4, R) reached on an error by Blue Wahoos' third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean to start the inning, then a wild pitch and a walk to Tyrone Taylor (1x2, BB) put a runner in scoring position for Adam Weisenburger (2x3, RBI, R, 2 2B). The catcher connected for a RBI double to put Biloxi up 1-0.
Pensacola (4-11) responded and tied the game with a run in the third off of starting pitcher Brooks Hall when they strung together three straight singles by Ryan Wright, Jesse Winker and Sean Buckley.
Biloxi (11-5) pulled ahead in the fifth when Weisenburger doubled to lead off the frame and came around to score on a two-out RBI double by Yadiel Rivera (1x4, RBI, 2B).
Rehabbing right-hander Jim Henderson (SV, 1) came on in the ninth and struggled with his control (27 pitches), walking leadoff man Marquez Smith before back-to-back strikeouts to Beau Amaral and Wright. An intentional walk to Winker put two on with two out and a wild pitch to Buckley advanced the runners and put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Henderson, who saved 28 games in 2013 for Milwaukee induced a groundout to Buckley to end the game and stretch the Shuckers' winning streak to five games.
Hall (W, 3-0) continued to keep pace with teammate Tyler Wagner by picking up his third win of the season. Both starters are 3-0 and are tied for the Southern League lead with Mobile BayBears' starter Gabriel Arias. The South Carolina native gave up just one run on seven hits, a walk and three strikeouts in his six innings of work.
Blue Wahoos' starting pitcher Tim Adleman (L, 0-3) was equally as effective as Hall, allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts, but suffered the loss.
Orlando Arcia went 0-for-2 at the plate, snapping his eight-game hitting streak, but walked and was hit by a pitch, extending the on-base streak to 16 games.
Game 2: Blue Wahoos 2, Shuckers 1
Game two was a battle on the mound as Biloxi starter Jacob Barnes (L, 0-3) was making his third start on the back-end of a doubleheader. Barnes held the Blue Wahoos (5-11) out of the hit column through four frames, but things came a bit unraveled in the fifth.
Juan Perez snapped the no-hit bid with a single to open the fifth. After a one out walk to Ray Chang, pinch hitter Sean Buckley doubled down the left field line scoring Chang. Leadoff hitter Ryan Wright followed with a single that plated Juan Silva, but a third potential run was negated on a stellar throw from right fielder Michael Reed to gun down Buckley at the plate.
Trailing 2-0, the Shuckers did get one run back in the top of the sixth as Orlando Arcia (0x2, RBI) brought home Kyle Wren (1x2, R, 2 SB) with a sacrifice fly to left. Wren had reached on a walk, which was followed by a Yadiel Rivera (2x3) single. Wren and Rivera pulled off a successful double-steal which set up the sacrifice fly by Arcia.
Arcia went hitless in each game on Sunday (0x4) and failed to reach base safely in game two, stopping his league-best on-base streak at 16 games.
The Shuckers (11-6) had a scoring chance in the first inning after back-to-back singles from Wren and Rivera opened the game, but a pickoff, pop out and strikeout would end a first and third, no out scoring chance.
Pensacola starter Layne Somsen retired at one point 13-straight Shuckers and earned his first win of 2015. It was his first start, having made three relief appearances. Somsen shutout Biloxi over five innings on two hits, walking one and striking out three. Ben Klimesh retired the final five batters and earned his third save.
The Shuckers are now 3-6 in seven-inning contests this season and are now caught up on games due to the early-season rain.
The two clubs are at it again on Monday night for game four of the six-game series in five days at 6:35 p.m. Monday eventing as RHP Tyler Wagner (3-0, 1.59) sets out for his fourth win in four tries. Opposite Wagner is Pensacola RHP Daniel Wright (0-2, 5.68). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the entire Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network.
