Shorthanded Chiefs Fall In Overtime

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs' benched was shortened to 13 skaters on Sunday afternoon, but the team still battled on to pick up a point for a 5-4 overtime loss to the Elmira Jackals on Sunday afternoon.

The Chiefs wound up on the plus side of a 2-1 score at the end of the first period. Sean Berkstresser capped off a four-goal weekend with his 19th of the season 7:26 into the game. Jeff Martens earned the primary assist while Anthony Sarno chipped in his first as a Chief. Chris Korchinski tied the game 25 seconds later with a shorthanded tally after stealing the puck from Bryan Marshall. Marshall earned his redemption by scoring on the same power play with 9:31 gone by in the frame. The center from Livonia, Michigan wasn't able to finish the period, though, as he took a knee-on-knee hit and missed the remainder of the game.

Elmira cashed in twice during the second period, as opposed to one for the Chiefs, and left the game tied at three apiece after 40 minutes of play. Bear Trapp tapped home his fourth of the season on the goal mouth to even the game up at two with 5:26 run off the clock. Chiefs' rookie do-everything skater Brian Kaufman potted a power play marker behind Andy Chiodo at 11:38 to re-earn the lead for the Chiefs. Berkstresser netted his second straight multi-point game by picking up an assist. Before the period expired, though, Olivier Proulx beat John Murray from the doorstep on the power play at 17:58. The Jackals captains' tying goal set the scene for a dramatic third period.

Johnstown countered Elmira's first period shorthanded goal with one of its own to take a 4-3 third period lead. Connor Shields chipped the puck off of the right wing wall out to center for a streaking Troy Schwab. A good 15 feet behind the Elmira defense, Schwab rifled home a wrist shot for his 16th goal of the season. The Chiefs defense tried to hold the fort, but when the Jackals pulled Chiodo for the extra attacker the pressure became too great. Off of a Korchinski pass from behind the cage, Justin Donati chipped in the tying goal with 49 seconds remaining. Elmira's momentum carried right into overtime as Donati set up Brennan Turner's game winner just 46 seconds into the extra time.

Murray took his second overtime loss in a row against the Jackals as he made 39 saves on the afternoon. The Chiefs went 2-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.
