Cyclones Stung By South Carolina, 6-2

CHARLESTON, South Carolina - The South Carolina Stingrays capitalized on three power play goals and a shorthanded marker in a 6-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Sunday afternoon. Rob Ricci netted a hat trick (three goals) for South Carolina. The win was the first in four tries this season for South Carolina, the defending Kelly Cup champions.

The teams exchanged goals in the first period and the stanza ended at one apiece. Cincinnati opened the scoring at 6:31 when Brett Robinson collected a rebound and stuffed it past Stingrays netminder Todd Ford. Brian O'Hanley had the assist on the goal. It was Cincinnati's ECHL-leading 39th first goal of the season- four more than second place Idaho. On South Carolina's second of three first period power play chances- Rob Ricci collected a cross ice pass at the bottom of the right circle to rip his 20th goal of the season past Cyclones goaltender Robert Mayer. Nick Klaren and Trevor Bruess had the assists. The shots favored South Carolina, 10-5, in the first term.

South Carolina scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 edge into the final intermission. Jake Hauswirth netted his 14th goal of the season on the power play- one of three such opportunities presented in the second period- at 4:50. Nick Klaren and Jay Cascalenda had the assists. The Stingrays added another score on Scott Bartlett's effort from the top of the right circle that beat Mayer just inside the far post. It was Bartlett's fifth goal of the campaign at 17:53 from Klaren and Ford. Through two stanzas, South Carolina had six power plays to Cincinnati's two and had had 8:40 of man-advantage time and 35 seconds of two man-advantage time. The shots edged the way of the Cyclones, 9-6, in the period.

A three goal explosion in the third period put the game away for South Carolina. Ricci scored an even strength and a shorthanded marker in the frame to complete his hat trick. Cascalenda added the other marker. The Cyclones got a goal from O'Hanley at 8:13- his seventh- from Scott Reynolds and Barret Ehgoetz to close the scoring. It was the 200th game as a Cyclone for Reynolds, who becomes just the third player in team history to hit the double century mark. The shots favored South Carolina, 9-8, in the term. For the game, the Stingrays won the shots battle, 25-22.

Todd Ford won his 100th ECHL game with a 20 save performance for the Stingrays. Robert Mayer absorbed the loss after stopping 18 shots. South Carolina was three for eight with the power play, while the Cyclones were zero for five with the extra attacker.

Cincinnati is 38-20-3, while South Carolina is 36-16-11. The contest was the fourth game of a six game road trip and the third game of a four game southern swing. The Cyclones will return to U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday, March 18 for a 7:30pm showdown against the Johnstown Chiefs. The southern swing ends with tomorrow's game at Gwinnett at 7pm (www.cycloneshockey.com).

Cincinnati leads the North Division with 79 points. Kalamazoo is second with 75, while Toledo is third at 66 and Wheeling rounds out the division with 62 points. The Cyclones have led the North Division for 61 days this season and for 322 days over the past three-plus seasons. Cincinnati's 'magic number' to clinching a playoff berth is now at eight.
