
Shortell, Surf Offense Strong in 7-3 Win

Ottawa, ON.- The Atlantic City Surf got seven and a third strong innings from starter Rory Shortell and Josh Burrus and Clyde Williams each drove in two runs as the Surf beat the Ottawa Rapidz 7-3 Monday Night at Rapidz Stadium.
Shortell would scatter three runs over those seven and a third innings on seven hits to go along with one walk and four strikeouts. The RHP (3-1) picked up his second victory in his last three starts and his second over Ottawa this season.
The Rapidz got on the board first after a wild pitch from Shortell scored 2B Jose De Los Santos to make it 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the first.
Atlantic City grabbed the lead in the top of the third inning when 1B Clyde Williams laced a two-out line drive to shallow center off of Ottawa starter Noel Baca that scored 3B Gil Zayas and CF Lucas Taylor to make it 2-1. Williams finished the night 1-for-3 and now has 19 RBIs in the month of July.
Ottawa tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when OF Mike Muscato < led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run off of Shortell. The Surf would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Burrus smacked a two-run double that scored Williams and LF Joe Burke. Atlantic City would add a 2-run triple by SS Anthony Granato and an RBI groundout by Plaza to make it a 7-2 lead.
Shortell allowed the first two men he faced in the bottom of the eighth to reach base then retired Ottawa 1B Jabe Bergeron and hit DH Jake Daubert with a pitch before leaving in favor of reliever Walker Whitley. The right hander went one and two thirds innings and retired all five men he faced, striking out two.
Noel Baca (1-7) took the loss for the Rapidz. The righty gave up six runs on eight hits in six and a third innings of work while walking three and striking out five.
Williams went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Surf offense while Burrus and Granato went 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 and drove in two runs apiece, respectively.
The Surf and Rapidz play game two of a three-game series Tuesday Night from Rapidz Stadium. LHP Brian Rodaway (5-5) takes the mound for the Surf while righty Adam Hawes is on the bump for Ottawa. First pitch is 7:05.
