McGill, Singleton earn Player of the Week honors

July 21, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

DURHAM, NC - Lincoln Saltdogs C Shawn McGill and Sioux City Explorers RHP Nick Singleton have been named by PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the American Association, as the Teamline Direct Batter and Pitcher of the Week.

In five games for the Saltdogs, McGill went 10-for-15 (.667) with three home runs and eight RBI. His slugging percentage over that span was 1.267 with an on-base percentage of .737. His batting average of .324 is currently the high water mark for American Association catchers and his on-base percentage of .436 ranks him second among all batters in the league. On the season he has five homers, five doubles, two triples, and 29 RBI.

A native of Wakefield, RI, the 24-year-old McGill spent the past two seasons with teams in the Gulf and New York- Penn leagues. He's made the most of his opportunity thus far with Lincoln and has been as durable as he has been productive, appearing in 56 of the team's 65 games this season.

In his last two starts for Sioux City, Singleton has been dominant. He did not allow an earned run in 15 innings pitched and struck out 10 batters while surrendering only eight hits and walking just three. He added a victory to improve his mark to 5-4 on the year to go with a sparkling 2.33 ERA in 14 starts. With 67 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings pitched, he's among the league leaders in both categories (fourth in Ks, second in IP), and also boasts a better than two to one strikeout to walk ratio. He has allowed just three home runs to the opposition, averaging one every 32.2 IP, the fifth best ratio of any American Association pitcher with 60 or more innings pitched.

The 25-year-old righty is a native of Montgomery, AL and played collegiately at Auburn University. He pitched professionally for three seasons prior to joining the Explorers for the 2008 campaign, compiling a winning percentage of .520 with 192 strikeouts in 236 innings.
